Daria Kasatkina vs. Naomi Osaka Full Match | 2025 US Open Round 3
really just adjusting the ball toss. Sun in your eyes down that far end at this time of the day. So Lorenzo Meti struggled with that on a couple of occasions in the previous match on this court. But no shadow on this court. That’s the case over inside Alrash Stadium during lunchtime. Challenge for the players next door. Not the case here. Let’s second service. What a start. Back to back aces. for Tina. game. What an opening service game. Wow. Four lines. theme. He 59. Yeah. 189 miles per hour second serve. It’s quite fast for Cassadkina standard. So you can see already Dasha trying to keep the ball low on the second serve, avoiding a situp ball for Naomi’s forehand. Just hasn’t quite found the rhythm on the first serve yet. 1530 now hasn’t made one yet. It’s an important number to track today. Zero from three under early pressure already. That’s all. Let first trying to get that serve short in the box and wide, but It’s been a bit of an erratic start for the number 15 seed. One of six first serves made. game Osaka. It’s a tough service game. One of six first serves and three double faults. Not getting it done today, is it? That sort of serving. Yeah. And Naomi’s great start with the four first serves in the court, two aces. You could just tell that it increased the mental pressure for Cassadkina to serve well. And her serve did not hold up to that. And that second serve is very much riskier than what Casatkina usually goes for on her second serve. So she’s very much aware of what’s happening on the other side. Love 15. First double faults four now. champion here 2018 and again 2020 was the addition that was played behind closed doors back in the dark days of the pandemic. two-time Australian Open champion as well. 2019 2021 150 behind us. Changing the team recently. Thomas in charge now. Let’s see a slice serve here. And 1315. Perfect result. It’s nice when your player can execute right away what you want them to do. She threw it as if she was going for a kick serve, too. So, that’s even more confusing on the other side. Naomi and Thomas teaming up this summer. And it’s been a pretty good start to their relationship with the run in Montreal to the final. game of soccer. Well, it has been the perfect start for the former champion. Just nine minutes played available there, including tennis. busy on Labor Day weekend, national holiday on Monday. So, holiday weekend in this part of the world to enjoy in the sunshine. Goodness me, the service. Love 15 not firing to say the least. It’s four doubles already. Well, Casatkina usually has a kick serve and that sits up right into the perfect strike zone of Osaka. So, she’s trying to do something out of her comfort zone here. She’s trying to keep the second serve low, and that’s what’s just thrown her off completely in these beginning stages of the match. might help settle it down under the third point she’s won on serve so far. That’s the man that’s been helping Kazatkina. Flavio Chipola, former pro looking in the direction of his player with concern right now. Oh, it’s been a tough 15 30. Yeah, I wonder if she has to go to her kick serve, the one that she feels comfortable with until she finds her rhythm. I was about to ask, how long do you stick with this plan before you you go back to basics? And so far, Osaka didn’t get the chance to hit a return winner. Give her at least a chance and then decide. Let’s see what she does here. and she’s gone through a few changes on technique on her serve. Now, if you take a look, she’s going up into the trophy position a bit quicker than she used to. could still use a bit of more leg drive. She hasn’t done badly when she’s got the serve into play, but she’s she’s missed so many that it’s meant these opening stages have been fairly one-sided with the five double faults. Just given too many free points away so far. Immediately on the on the back foot. Game point here though. Yes, it’s alarming by how much that missed. Double fault tally continues to rise at six now. She’s only made two first serves, two of 12. An opportunity for Asaka really take charge of this opening set. Advantage. It’s hard to watch, but once I think every tennis player, everybody who has ever played knows how it feels that once the fear sets into your muscles, it’s almost like there’s lead in them, you just feel so stiff and rigid and you want to accelerate, but you just can’t be able to do it. Gain Osaka. So, the one-sided nature of this opening set continues. Four games to love surf struggles continue. Quick reminder to download the US Open app where you can follow your favorite players. And you can watch live 3D views of all the singles matches as well. That’s available on the Apple App Store and Google Play Store. And you can even check how full the courts are. I noticed that a couple of days ago. Oh, that’s the best invention. It’s so good, isn’t it? Yes. So, if you open the app and you go to more 15 lights and then there’s a a court seating availability option. You fire that up and you can see that Louis Armstrong Stadium currently is at 70% capacity. So if you’ve got a grounds pass just deep, you can head to this court and get a seat in the top deck with a grounds pass. One of the fabulous options here. It’s quite a court as well. 14,000 capacity. Second biggest show court. It’s good use of technology that, isn’t it? I’m a big fan. So many of the the courts with huge stands here. 305 and it just seems like the serve woos have just seeped into into the entire system of Casatkina’s game. You can see here 11 to six unforced errors. Kasakina is usually a very stable, consistent player who makes a lot of balls, extends rallies. 405, but with those serve issues, she is just not herself right now. Has lost all clarity. points for 5-0. Let for service game and another ace to wrap up game five. That’s four on the board already. It’s a five game. The former have been poor so far to say the least. Seven double faults, only three first serves made. There we go. That’s better. That’s what we want to see. We want to see an improvement here. Trying to make this first set competitive. It’s the combination. She’s been trying to hit that serve, hasn’t she? Trying to hit that spot. 15 kina former Grand Slam semi- finalist on the clay of Paris 2022 led second service to have variety to good effect during that run to the final four in the French capital. It’s good. Inch perfect. Everything going way so far. 13. Just seen the replay of the close call on the big screen. Bang on the line. Just out of the wrist with a little flick. Got that over Casettina’s head. 154. Goodness knows what’s going through our minds right now after a rough 22 minutes. Osaka already with set points. game and again it’s perfection. Rock solid set from the former champion and serves up a bagel. Love 15. Must be slightly strange feeling for a soccer because she probably feels like she hasn’t really played that much tennis yet, has she? That had so few extended rallies. Not that she’ll be overly concerned. The numbers her side are pretty impressive. They’re serving by and large pretty good. Good number of winners, positive ratio of winners to four stereos. She’s doing everything right so far. Just hasn’t been tested. That is quite brilliant though. Sort of power and precision at her disposal. And that is always a good sign when you see Naomi Osaka striking the back end down the line. So well so dangerous for the opponents because even if they get there they have to lift the ball crosscourt and that’s where Naomi waits with her forehand just a fraction wide and just didn’t quite commit to closing the net down after the approach shot. Chose to go backwards. Got caught in no man’s land there. Well, here we go. 134. Couple of misses and Kazakina with an opportunity here. [Applause] A very brief opportunity. It’s caught the outside edge of the line for a sixth ace. 12th class. Advante Joaka. Very difficult to live with when she’s striking the ball with that sort of quality. Stop. Yes. Got it. advantage. This is what Cassettina usually does so well. She keeps the ball in play with good depth, heavy on the forehand, flatter on the backhand, and you really have to work hard for your points. Seemingly finding her rhythm slowly here, Kasakina. Yeah, much better signs in this opening game of set two. Another break chance and a second serve this time. and a break of serve. So the best possible start to the second set. First game, second set as well. BTC Lock. Despite that miss, much much better signs for Kasakina who is now making Naomi Osaka work for her points. Naomi really has to play a good constructive point to come away with a success. Still missing first serves. 153. Give Oasaka any kind of encouragement to take charge of the point early by taking on second serves. Zero from three in this game. It’s a clean forehand. 154. And that is so interesting on Naomi’s forehand. You see Kasakina being in the corner and just letting it go past her. And that’s because Naomi’s forehands often time look like they are going to fly out and they drop in the last moment. You can see Kasakina being right there. Again, the power is too much. Breaks straight back. Nice response. One game all second. I appreciate it’s difficult to analyze Aaka’s level today because it was a peculiar first set to say the least, but across the Montreal run and the couple of matches you’ve seen this week, where is she in terms of a deep run here at the US Open? And I know she’s still got business to take care of today, but is she in that territory? That sort of conversation of someone who who could have another really good stay here. That’s a nice point by Kasakina, but I think she’s very, very close. I think she’s playing the big points better. I think she’s playing with a lot more discipline. She’s serving well. She’s returning well. And that final loss against Embokco in Montreal was so rough that I think she might have taken that as a motivation to not let that happen to herself once more. And for those who haven’t seen it, Osaka was well in command at 621 all a couple of break points, didn’t take them, and then got so disappointed by herself that she wasn’t able to play with clarity any longer. And I don’t think she will allow herself for that to happen again here. Great depth. wondering about the call that time, but none came. 1530. Let’s catch in the back of that baseline. If she does win this match, we’ll play Coco Goff in the last 16. That would be a blockbuster on Monday. 1540. Much more competitive and again has put together a decent return game here. Kazakina Yeah. And our third break of the set already 15. And that is the only thing Kasakina needs to avoid at all costs is those midpace balls through the center of the court when Osaka can go around to use her forehand and has a bit of time on it 150. That’s Osaka’s best shot when she can set up with her feet, take the energy from the ground up and through her body. 1315 28 years of age representing Australia of course at this US Open. Aies have welcomed her into their fold. Switching nationalities this year. It’s a brilliant backhand at full stretch. Finally starting to see a level of tennis that she’s capable of. This is good to see. Finally a better service game so far game that will grow the confidence. Yeah, brilliant service game from Dashkina. Really showing her full potential of a player. Nice angles, heavy forehands, solid serving. That’s what has made her such a dangerous threat for so many years on tour. Maybe you can head to the US Open website, usopen.org, for all the information you need to track. Track all the matches on day seven of main draw tennis. All the live scoring highlights, stats, schedules, and draws on there. That’s us open.org. Look like a different player in this set. I’m so impressed with her Lee just to we’ve seen the first set. It was really terrible and she looked on the verge of tears to turn it around in this manner. against a player of Assaka’s quality. Exactly. It’s so so impressive just as a mental task to be able to overcome this and leave it in the past no matter how this ends. It’s a really great job by Kasakina struggling behind the second serve now. One of eight in this set. That’s part of the reason. Much better returning. 154. Kazakina with so much depth on her second serve returns. Difficult for Saka to get on the front foot and that’s where she plays best and that’s where she wants to be. So, Casadina doing a great job in turning things around here. chance to break for a third time in this second set. She does. Well, not many people will have seen this coming after the opening set. Second set, first set of crazy turnaround outside Armstrong. 4-1 double break. 59 first serve numbers in this set actually all of a sudden pretty respectable eight of 12. It’s the error count so far. Much tidier second set from Kazakina in that respect. Just two on four steros in this second so far. 1530. Because of the nature of the match, must be actually quite hard for both of them to feel like they’ve got any rhythm today. It’s been a stop start this one. 15 Great points coming thick and fast. Couple now for the two-time former champion. 3040 [Applause] game of soccer. Too much accuracy of return. So narrows the gap. Very unique Naomi Osaka forehand. She’s one of the players who’s able to accelerate the wrist just before she hits it so quickly that it gives it that loop and heaviness and pace. Love 15. That was the example when she slows it down and just doesn’t get the same power on it. That’s beautiful. You know, she will feel if she can get a hold of serve on the board here, get it back to 4-3, then she’ll still feel like a straight set win is on the cards given she’s broken five times today. 13 T-15. Born in Japan, but moved to New York as a youngster. So very familiar with this city. The feel of New York. electricity that the US Open brings as a sports event feeds off that See 15. 4030 Saka wondering hoping that that was going to miss the line. It’s caught the outside edge. That was nicely done. You can see here a bit of height on that one and then flattening it out on the next game. racing back into this set having trail 4-1 breaking a hold and it’s extremely heating down on the USA Billy Jin King National Tennis Center today 4-3 beautiful conditions few wispy clouds no threat of any rain today. Yes, brilliant starts to game eight. Couple of hammer blows there. too. Good. Absolutely just a perfect point beginning for the return to the second shot and then finally that back hand. Take a look how high and deep that ball is and it opens up the court nicely on the down the line side. 20 winners so far to Kazatkina’s eight. Got up out of a chair and said to herself, I’m winning this in straight sets. I’m going to find another level. Double figures for the double faults from Kazadkina today. Three chances to break and three games in a row for Naomi Saka who is flying again building momentum. Four games all second sets. A flawless game from Naomi Osaka here. found the depth and the pace and the safety and that trifecta is not easy to achieve when you’re hitting the ball as hard as Naomi Osaka is. So now within two games of a place in the last 16 be. It’s a long time since Naomi Saka made the fourth round of the major back when she won the Australian Open. In fact, 2021 was the most recent passage into the second week at any of the four Grand Slams. 305 And again that heavy forehand preparing the big backhand down the line. What a pattern that is for Naomi Osaka. Of course Naomi was missing for a good chunk of that period on maternity leave. took a 15-month break after giving birth to her daughter July 2023, came back 2024. So, has missed a few grand slams that period since the 2021 Aussie Open title. 134. 14. [Applause] No, too much on the forehand. We’ll look towards coach leads five the bench at the sit down. frustrated right now. Yeah. And it’s affecting her game in a way that she’s going for too much too early in the rally. Needs to try and find the point construction again that she’s shown throughout this match so well. She went big pretty early in the point again. It worked that time. Couldn’t have placed this any better. Right in the junction of the sideline and baseline 1315. [Applause] Crucial now that Kazak Kina makes first serves. Even though the serving has improved, still struggling behind the second in this set. Two of nine points. One 405 set points for the 15 seed. First one saved. Had a bit of luck along the way with the net court. 2030. [Applause] Oh, she just pushed it long. Can’t have been by much. Get out. [Applause] What a great time to find your second ace. [Applause] Okay. And she does seal the second set. Terrific effort mentally as much as anything after such a one-sided opening set. It’s game on inside Armstrong set apiece. What a mental turnound from Daria Cassad Kina. That was Let’s get our teeth into the third set. Third and deciding set of course this third round match. One set shootout for a place in the last 16. [Applause] [Applause] I wonder what that delay what kind of effect that will have on Kasakina who’d got into a nice rhythm in that second set. Much better rhythm. The sak has come out firing 40 lak. That’s a very encouraging game for now Miosaka who now has the chance to shake off that disappointment from the second set. That was something that she wasn’t able to do in that Montreal final. So an opportunity for her to remedy some of that beautiful first game. Simple patterns opening the court and into the created space she went. [Applause] Go. 15. Come on. Some tough three set matches. A Saka this season. Hasn’t been particularly good of late in deciding sets. three setter against Victoria Bo that you mentioned Andrea that was Montreal final of course did win a three setter earlier in the week in Canada but prior to that lost four in a row Rome Roland Garris Berlin and Wimbledon Yeah. And I I’ve watched some of them and I’ve called that match in Montreal that final. And it’s often times that when Naomi gets very disappointed with herself, she she loses clarity of how to construct a point and starts just going for too much too early on in the rally. That’s where things have gone wrong in the past. She now has somebody by her side in Thomas Victorski who is very much about the discipline and the playing crosscourt when you need to play crosscourt. Here he is on the left. be pleased with that sort of discipline. Yeah, that was the absolute perfection of how to be patient and still aggressive. Come on. Come on. And that angle right there on the short point in the court opens once more the back end down the line. That’s been so successful for Naomi today when she’s hit it in the right moments. Yes. What a response. It’s got to be her best back hand today. And how about that Lee from the wos of the first set. We have now a very entertaining contest between two wellplaying players. Great job by Cassadkina here. Trying again to go up the line with the back hands. [Applause] game. That’s a good hold. One game final set sort of hold that will frustrates Naomi Asaka. She probably felt like she was putting a pretty good return game together there and it’s just slipped through her fingers. Credit to Kazakina. One a piece final set 50. Yeah. A little annoyed Dasha here with herself, but that’s what she does so well. She finds depth on those returns. Just went a bit far in the in the end, but the intention was correct for Kasakina. Gets another chance here. Second serve. Oh, with the ball crew with a acrobatic recovery. 59 [Applause] really in the balance this match. It’s so hard to believe, isn’t it? He watched the first set which was so one-sided. Just goes to show what you can achieve if you fight hard in this sport and how it can mentally affect your opponent because it feels like Fancy Kazakina now in a much better place than Aaka mentally. I agree. I agree with you. And you can see how uncomfortable her game is. The forehand is so loopy and high. You have to create your own pace and then the backhand goes through the court quite quick. So you constantly have to adjust. She has that natural change of rhythm in her ground strokes. Casatkina. And if your footwork is just a fraction of a percent off, you will start to make errors. [Applause] 40 30 Five out of five behind the first serve so far in this final set for a Saka. game but eventually a hold leads two games to one final stats which were non-existent in the first set but she’s got better and better today in a much better place in terms of she’s trying to do out on the court the execution of that game plan. Long conversation with a coach between sets two and three when a Saka disappeared. Good five minutes or so in deep discussions 15. still feels like there’s a lot riding on whether she can make the first serve. Pretty good success rate when she does. And it’s been a different story when she’s missed that first serve today to seven of 28. Second serve points one. Oh, you just called it. And Lee, I wonder what you think. But sometimes it feels with Casatkina, she steps up to the line with the attention not to miss, to make the serve. And that’s where things seem to go wrong. When she steps up with the mindset, I’m going to hit a good serve. That’s when she makes them and plays well afterward. 154. [Applause] Chances to search ahead. Yeah, it’s just deep. There is the break. First of the set and it is the former champion who strikes first. Three games to one final set. Nice job here by Osaka to stay in the point. Those were well struck balls by Casadkina. Did not overplay this rally. Asaka looks to hold here for what would be a 4-1 lead and some breathing space. Got herself into all sorts of problems during that second set. Left herself with too much to do from 14. That is tremendous death depth from a defensive position from Casatkina. Not a lot of players can pull that off being pushed into the forehand side like that. [Applause] Ace number eight. 15 and 30. [Applause] That’s the [Applause] 11 breaks of ser we’ve had since we started this match an hour and a half ago. Saka working hard to avoid another at this stage. 304. Oh, she slowed the wrist down completely. You could really see it how she tried to guide that second serve. use. It’s a nice response and immediately a bit of back and forth with the coach though. It looked like she needed some help with the serve. I think judging by the uh gestures. Yeah, exactly. I think you’re reading the gesturing of tennis players between coaches. Here we go. Correct. Yeah. What should I do on a serve? That’s some serious quality. Had a good time. What a great point. And again that back end down the line creating space for Naomi Osaka and the crosscourt eventually closing the deal down. Great energy from her. It was a great game and a big hold of serve. Yeah. Sigh of relief that finally she has some breathing space in this match after a difficult second set. Main draw tennis. bit cloudier and a bit wetter during fan week, but still easily got through all of the qualifying rounds as well as a highly successful mixed doubles championship on the Tuesday and the Wednesday. [Applause] must hold serve territory here for Kazadkina. just going to stay in this match. 40 game on Sakalit four games to two finets [Applause] and the recovery had to start there. Had she dropped serve again, Saka’s broken seven times today, then the match would have been all but over. But still with a chance now. [Applause] Could use a good game on return here. The 15th seed, that’s for sure. Getting really fired up in this third set. Asaka more evidence of just how tough the second half of this match has been. 15. [Applause] There’s the firepower. It’s never too far away. Yeah, beautifully done. That precise footwork to get herself in the right distance from the ball that enables her to create so much. 40 [Applause] [Music] highly efficient service game. Moving just a little bit closer leads to the second week in New York 5-2. I should probably say the third week technically speaking, but technically speaking, yeah, we know it as the second week, don’t we? When we’re talking about main draw tennis at a major. And I really like what Naomi is doing here. You said it, Lee. She’s more vocal than she usually is. And I think that she’s trying that tension that you get when you are about to break a big milestone and you mentioned it earlier. This fourth round would be a big accomplishment for her in a while. Last time she reached the fourth round of a major, she won the Australian Open in 2021. And instead of keeping all that tension inside her and letting it eat eat her up, she is trying to get it out of her body. And it’s making her play really well in this third set. And look at Thomas Victorski. Usually you don’t see him time that fired up either. [Applause] serving to stay in the tournament. Daria Kazakina did a fabulous job of fighting hard in the second set. Can she find a way back into this match? 25. Safety lines. 30 life. third T-15. Hopefully that one won’t do too much damage. And the good news for Kazakina is most of those well not good news but good news that they they’ve cleared up through the match. I think it was eight in the first set. So it has got better. Oh dear. Well, that is double fault number 14. Are they returning just the wrong time here for Daria Kazakina who was plagued by double faults in the opening set. It was set that disappeared in a flash around 20 minutes or so it took. adjust when she needs to rely on a serve to stay in this match. It’s disappeared again by the looks of things. 61 milesPH. That’s much better. Yeah, that second serve 30 m an hour quicker than the first. And it’s just again that intention for Casatkina to step up to the line and have something positive that she wants to do with her serve rather than trying to avoid to miss it. That’s what you sometimes get from her game. She did well to regroup again. That was the case after the first set with all the serving problems, but put it to one side. Five games to three. played a good second set and it was very competitive early stages of the third between Kazakina and Asaka. But the four-time major champion finds herself serving for a place in the last 16. [Music] Love 15. just got enough pace on that return. Force Aaka to catch that forehand late. 15. That is nicely recognized by Nomi Osaka. That was a deep one, but this one landed a bit short and Osaka all over it right away. First, 34th winner compared to 15 from her opponent today. And another quickly followed by number 35. 135. Clean as a whistle that back end. Two points required. Finishing this in style by the looks of things. An hour and 43 on the match clock. Now, the number 23 seed with two chances to finish off. Victory for Naomi Asaka. And she is back into the fourth round of a major for the first time since 2021. Topsy turby contest that one. Very one-sided opening set. Did well to regroup after the second and she sets up a mouthwatering meeting with Koko Golf.

Go Naomi Osaka 🎉
Buen tenis. Rybakina está jugando bien. Me resulta más entretenidos los juegos a tres sets, a cinco son muy largos para mí y me aburro. Me gustaría todo a tres sets.
Sdos ✌️

Purple is also the color of this tournament Commentators have to comment, you shouldn't feel a preference. 2nd match I've watch, – last one w/ Coco – and the same commentator you can clearly heard only critics for Osaka while she is winning.
