Short Film “The place before daybreak” |ショートフィルム『日の出を知らない街』本編
Hello? Hey, long time no see! It’s been a while. Where are you? Shinjuku! I just got back to Tokyo. At this hour? Whatcha up to? Me? Finishing up work. Again? You work too much. It’s fine. I’m used to it. Hey, Nao. Yes? Let’s go to Okutama. Okutama? Now? Right now! Let’s meet there at twelve! Nao! You’re too impulsive. Um… I’m Jackson! What’s up? I’m Naoya Iida. Nice to meet you. No need to be so formal. We met at Mount Fuji two days ago. Now, we travel together. How about we go get some lunch? I’m starved. Nao, what do you want? I’m fine with whatever. You know, Nao? How long has it been? Nao, how’s work? Well, same as always. I’m pretty much used to it. A call? Sorry, it’s my lunch alarm. You use that every day? Yes. Come on, man. Just eat lunch whenever you want. But… It’s just easier this way. Really…? Yes. I have here the potted rice with wild veggies. It’s chicken and gobo. Ready? Enjoy your meal. Makes me feel alive. Good, right? Very. You been traveling? Not really. I thought as much. I don’t really have time to travel. What if there’s something down
the path you don’t take? You gotta make things happen yourself. Yeah. Look at this place! Isn’t it beautiful? So beautiful! Wanna skip stones? Not bad. Not far enough. Let’s go with this. Watch me go farther. Two skips! Too bad. I like that idea. Nao, c’mere! Huh? Give it a try. It might not be good. You’ll be fine. Don’t think. Feel. So cool. It’s beautiful. Hey, Jackson. What have you filmed here in Japan? Nature and the people who live here. Really? What do you like about Japan? I love Japan’s natural beauty. Like here and the nature scenes in Tokyo. This is still Tokyo. Is it really? Tokyo’s amazing. You live in a wonderful city. Yeah. I gotta go soon. I have work tomorrow. – Right.
– Yeah. You said you’re used to your job now. But…did you adapt, or is it out of habit? Huh? It’s important to adapt. The ability to adapt to new
environments is commendable. I couldn’t do it. I think it’s great. But… If it becomes a habit, one day, you won’t be able to go on. Once it swallows you up… that’s it. I’m just kidding. – You’ve got work…
– It’s fine. Let’s go. Can you fill this out for me? Name and contact info here. Thank you. Karin, Takuma! Don’t bother the guests. Sorry about that. It’s a family business. Mister! Wanna play tag? Takuma, please! You’re it. – Run!
– Go! Here you are. Nao, good luck. He’s it! Run! Well, darn. Try and catch me! You’re too fast. He got me. – I’ll hold him.
– No fair! Let’s race! Go! How’s that? Not yet? – A little more.
– More? Last potato. Last potato! That smells so good! – Right?
– Wanna try? – Yeah.
– Here. Very good. Seconds! Uh… Please? – Already?
– Of course. Go ahead. It’s just so good. Glad to hear. – You want some too?
– I’m okay. More for me. It brought tears to my eyes. – I’m all warmed up.
– Me too. – That felt great.
– So great. Let’s go again tomorrow. Hey, Shogo. Do you remember when
nobody could reach you for a week? Oh, back in college? Yes. You said you were traveling? Yeah. I had the sudden urge to just wander. That’s when I realized that… even someone as seemingly cheerful
as you could disappear in an instant. That’s why I… That’s why you invited me to climb Mount Fuji? Yes. Really? Really…? You know… You saved me back then. That’s why I decided to call you and see how you were doing. I see. Let’s go on a trip sometime. Let’s. Yeah. I really should get going. You should. Yeah. – Morning.
– You have perfect timing. I feel great. We can tell. Nao, you’re leaving? Yeah. Let’s do this again. See you later. Thank you. Until next time. – Okay.
– Get home safe. I will, thank you. I’ve never seen the Tokyo sunrise.

Synopsis:
Naoya, living in the heart of Tokyo, spent his days caught up in the routines of a work-centered life. It had been a long time since he indulged in his favorite pastime — traveling, something he had loved since his university days.
One day, out of the blue, he receives a phone call from Shogo, a senior from his university, inviting him on a trip to Okutama. Though puzzled by the sudden invitation, Naoya heads out to Okutama, where Shogo introduces him to an American traveler named Jackson.
The three of them explore the lush natural surroundings — a place so rich in nature it hardly feels like it’s still part of Tokyo. Along the way, they meet warm-hearted locals and fully enjoy the natural beauty of Okutama.
This unexpected escape from his ordinary life brings Naoya small yet meaningful realizations and changes. The scenery before his eyes begins to gently shine in a new light.
In 2022, the Tokyo Metropolitan Government (TMG) and the Short Shorts Film Festival & Asia (SSFF & ASIA), an Academy Awards® qualifying short film festival, launched the “Sustainable Recovery Project.”
This project aims to create a short film that show the city of Tokyo, its residents, and the tourists who visit the city, as part of the city’s efforts to become a sustainable city, and to show Tokyo’s diverse attractions to people in Japan and abroad. After screening the film (real venue and online) at SSFF & ASIA 2025, the film will be also used for tourism promotion of Tokyo and other occasions.
Through this project, TMG and SSFF & ASIA will give opportunities to award-winning filmmakers of the past SSFF & ASIA editions by letting them write and direct the short film, in order to promote and appeal the attraction of Tokyo both in Japan and abroad. By doing so, we will continue to raise the visibility of festival winners and foster young filmmakers.
