Hello. Today I will be taking care of a Goyo-matsu. The Kabudachi tree shape of Goyo-matsu is very popular. All the students at Tojyu-en want one. Kanta-san and Yuki-san from Tokorozawa-engei also said they like it. I got this one. I’m surprised at how big it is. Trees like this are not often available. I would like to talk about the highlights of this tree and how to take care of it. I think that people who buy such trees will be worried about how to finish them. I would like to think about it from the viewers’ perspective. Thank you. Let’s get started. This tree is a Kabudachi tree shape of Goyo-matsu. There are seven trunks. The good thing about this tree is that it is old and thin. Also, the Kabudachi tree shape is characterized by the fact that you can feel the scenery. When you get this, how do you start caring for it? What do you care about and what do you do with it? I’ll tell you my concept now. When I watch other people’s videos, I don’t just watch it and finish, but I stop the video and think about it. Then, before the person starts working, I imagine how I would do it. After that, I watch the video and check my answer. When you see this tree, think about what you care about and how you would carve it. I can’t say that there is a right answer, but thinking about it is also instructive. The part that bothered me the most about this tree is this. This trunk is brought together with a very thick aluminum wire. I think this is bringing together the trunk that was behind. However, this trunk is hidden from the front and cannot be seen. (The trunk behind cannot be seen.) Therefore, it should be moved this way. I want to fill this space. To do this, I will raise the lying branches and move the right branch to the left. I will fix this later by attaching wire. Another issue was also raised in the previous video. Is it a Kabudachi or a Kabudachi? Kabudachi refers to the shape of the tree . Whether it is a tree made of several trees or one tree, the tree shape is called Kabudachi. Kabudachi is a word that describes the tree shape, just like Kengai and Moyougi. (So that’s what you call the Kabudachi tree shape?) Yes. Creating it from a single tree is called Toriki or Ikadabuki. Creating it by bringing together separate trunks is called Yoseue. In the case of trees like this, they are usually planted one by one . I wanted to clean up the moss and weeds on this tree and see what the base of the tree was like. Since this was the same tree shape as before, I thought I would make this the second video. (I think this is a mixed planting. It would be amazing if it was a Kabudachi at this size.) I think so. Everyone would be surprised if it was a Kabudachi, even though it’s said to be a mixed planting. (I see.) That’s what I wanted to make a video about. However, when I had a professional bonsai artist look at it today, he said, “The base of this plant is joined together.” (Really?) So, I don’t need to check the base of the plant anymore. Actually, there was someone who wanted this tree, and the buyer has already been decided. So, I was told that it would be better for me not to take care of it too much. I decided to just clean it up. In conclusion, this plant is joined together. The buyer said that he didn’t want me to use wire. This time, we talked about the shape of the tree and how to make the base of the plant. I actually want to repot it. However, today, instead of repotting, I will make a hole to improve water flow. Finally, I will remove the old leaves. Be sure to remove the leaves from the bottom up. Remove the leaves like this. (The leaves at the bottom are old, right?) Yes. Please remove the old leaves at the bottom. The yellow leaves are old leaves. Don’t forcefully remove them, just remove the leaves that you can. I think removing the old leaves will make the area look fresher. I’m worried that this task will take a long time. (The leaves you’re removing are from the year before last, right?) Yes. This year’s buds are already growing at the tips. (These are this year’s buds. The photo was taken at the end of April.) Ah! The buds have been removed! (Be careful because this kind of thing happens.) There are branches that are no longer needed, so we’ll organize them. For example, we don’t need branches that stick out from the outline like this. It looks neater without these branches, so we’ll remove them. (It was raining just a while ago, but it suddenly cleared up.) The weather has changed suddenly. I’ll also cut off long, unnecessary branches. I think I’ll do a little pruning. (Are the branches that stick out from the outline unnecessary?) Yes. It’s better to remove the branches that stick out from the outline. This one has a bud on the inside, so I’ll cut it back to this point. This is to make the outline smaller. (If there is a bud inside, you can make it smaller by replacing it, right?) Yes. For Goyo-matsu, we cut the bud at the tip and make a bud sprout from the base of the branch. For Goyo-matsu, we carefully nurture the bud at the base of the branch and drive it in small. This branch is also elongated, so we cut it. I would like to prune and remove the old leaves. (This will take time, right?) Yes. This is a time-consuming task. We don’t have time. (This shop closes in an hour and a half.) Therefore, I would like to work quickly. I will tell you one thing to be careful about. When the bud is in this state, you cannot put wire on it. (What state is that?) This is the softest state of the bud. (Does that mean the bud is in the swollen state?) Yes. I just touched the bud a little and it came off. It is a very weak bud, so I will work carefully. So you can’t put wire on it. (Do you have to remove the old leaves?) No. There’s no need to remove them. (Why are you removing the old leaves now?) This is to improve the appearance. We don’t need the old leaves, so we remove them. Old leaves make the tree fat, so we remove them to prevent that. (It might be safer to remove them before the new buds appear or later.) Right. Here are the flowers. It’s better to remove the flowers. This will also damage the buds if you’re not careful. (Juniperus rigida also has flowers.) Right. (I removed all the flowers from my tree.) Right. It’s the same as Goyo-matsu. When you remove the flowers, the stems will grow, but there’s nothing you can do about it. Now, I’m going to remove the old leaves. This will take time. (What do you do after removing the old leaves?) After that, I’m going to manipulate the branches. I’ve just finished surgery, so I’m going to do simple work this time. I want to do it quickly. Earlier, I explained that it would be better to pick the flowers. However, there is a possibility that the buds will come off, so I will stop picking the flowers. There is not enough time to do that. (Is that because you don’t have time?) Actually, it would be better to pick the flowers, but I am worried that the buds will come off. If you pick the flowers, please be careful. People with smooth thumbs cannot do this. (What does that mean?) This work involves controlling the force with your thumb to pick the leaves. (You can do this by putting rosin on your thumb.) That’s right. There is a suspicious person. (A person dressed strangely has come.) This is traditional style in Oman. (Kanta has just returned from Oman.) (Who did you meet in Oman?) I met the former Speaker of the House of Representatives of Oman. That’s amazing. Now the tree is beautiful. It looks so much better. Now I’ll blow away the old leaves. I’ll take the rest with my hands. (What’s the next step?) I’ll take the old leaves a little more beautifully. Finished. Next I’ll remove this and manipulate the trunk. This part is protected with rubber, but it may be dented. How is it? (That part is damp.) It is definitely damp. I’ll use wire to pull the trunk to bring it closer. The trunk I’m pulling will be protected by wrapping rubber around it again. (Why did the previous owner bring the trunk here?) I don’t know. Maybe this trunk was too far back. (Maybe the trunk was lying down?) If so, I have to be glad that the trunk is here. But I can see through the back, so I need to fix it. It’s better to pull it as low as possible. To bring the trunk closer, it’s better to pull it at the top. It’s not often that you pull it at the bottom. In this case, I want to move the trunk on the right side as much as possible. I want to move the trunk on the left side a little closer. So I’ll wrap the wire around the left trunk at a lower position and the right trunk at a higher position. I’m worried that the branch on this side will hit it. I’ll pull this trunk closer with my hand. (Oh! I feel like the trunk has moved.) Looking from the front, has the image changed from before? (You can see the trunk a little.) Is it only a little bit visible? (At first you couldn’t see anything, so it’s changed a little.) Now, let’s move the trunk a little closer. (Oh! (Does that mean the value of the tree will increase?) Yes. I don’t like the strange wire here. This is probably the wire holding the roots in place. I’ll cut it off. It’s held in place by copper wire. (Will the tree fall out of the pot if I remove this?) I don’t know. But the roots are packed in so it won’t be easy to remove. (What will we do next?) This is… It’s done! (Really?) Let’s pull the trunk a little further. (It’s better to be able to see the whole trunk from the front, right?) Yes. There are some overlapping parts that are hard to see, but it’s better to be able to see it all. This is a much better shape. I wanted to repot it, but I can’t do that, so I’ll do something else instead. I’m going to make a hole with this to make it easier for water to flow through. (Is that chopsticks?) Yes.
