Hidden Hot SpringsDeep in the ForestAt Your Own RiskKosaka TownHello , this is “How to Walk Japan” .Tonight we will be spending the night in our car at Kosaka SA on the Tohoku Expressway. I will challenge the secret hot spring that I couldn’t reach last time. May 31, 2025, Kosaka SA, 6:00AM. The new tires look cool, but they’ll be muddy today… The “Okuoku Hachikuro Onsen” I’m heading for is 13.7km from Kosaka IC, so it’s not that far away. However, the route is through the national forest and passes through a forest road halfway through. The relative locations are like this . It’s even further back from the “Hachikuro Onsen” I visited last time. April 2025. Last time, there was still snow and I couldn’t get in from here because of tree cutting work . I heard that there is a good hot spring further back in Hachikuro Onsen, so I really wanted to go. So this is my revenge. As usual, my wife is still asleep. I’ve already entered the forest road, but there was tree cutting work going on around here, so it’s not paved, but it’s not that bad. I can’t see the mirrors . So far, everything is going well. Today’s weather forecast is rain from the afternoon. I want to take a bath before the weather turns bad. Mirrors have fallen over. Perhaps it’s the weight of the snow, but there are hardly any mirrors that are standing upright. In 1974, drilling was done to investigate black ore, and hot spring water gushed out from 320-350m underground. The valve was closed immediately after drilling, so it was not possible to use the hot spring. There is a guardrail, though. The flow of hot spring water resumed when the valve was opened around 1984, and hot spring deposits (sinter) of calcium carbonate began to form, and the hot spring deposits have now accumulated to a thickness of about 1m. There are trees. Carbon dioxide gushes out from the hot spring outlet, and it is also called a “natural jacuzzi.” However , there are many horseflies that gather around the carbon dioxide, so it seems to be a big problem if you don’t choose the season. It’s a road that you can somehow get through with your beloved caravan wide high roof, but you should be prepared for scratches from rubbing against the trees. The navigation system says that the destination is close, but I can’t see anything. Does it suddenly appear? The destination is on the left. Thank you for your hard work. Yes? Yes? Is it around here? Yes? Where? Did you get there ? Was it there? ? ? Not there? Let me look for it… where? A single road in the mountains, a very nice place, the air is fresh. I look around for now, is there any place where steam is rising? Deep forest continues as far as the eye can see… There seems to be a stream nearby, and I can hear the sound of water flowing faintly. Where? WWW Is it already buried? The navigation system said the destination was a little before, but if I go back and look, there might be something there…All I can hear is the chirping of wild birds and the sound of the wind, I can’t find it. What remains is… Eh, should I go? I don’t have the courage to go. What’s scary is that I’m afraid of bears… Early mornings by the water are the worst, aren’t they? In the end, I decided to go in. I came all the way here, but it’s hard to tell from the screen, but it’s quite a slope. I wonder if I can get back… Really, it’s scary… There’s some kind of animal trail. This is it! Amazing!! It was worth coming, amazing! Calcium-sodium chloride-bicarbonate-sulfate spring Contains iron, but the concentration is not high. The temperature does not seem to be 40 degrees. There is a stream nearby, and bears are scary after all. Carbon dioxide gas is spewing out, and it seems to be a jacuzzi. I’m happy that I found this place, so I’ll move on. (Because I’m afraid of bears…) Bathing is at your own risk. I don’t know the way back… Ah, it’s this way. I was surprised… I understand the feeling of getting lost in the forest, it’s scary, isn’t it? There it is! (Hot spring) Shall I go in? Um, well, I don’t want to go in (because I’m afraid of bears). I can see the river over there, and next to it is a hot spring bubbling up with great force. The back of this is “Okuoku Hachikuro Onsen.” Hey, since this is how far back it is, isn’t it impossible to go deep inside? This time, my goal is deep inside, so I can’t go back here. When the previous person was the mayor, wasn’t it maintained? That may be so. The “person from before” was someone I went with to “Yakuro Onsen” last time, and he’s a hot spring lover. I wonder if I can get there in this car. Is it okay? From what I’ve seen so far , the roads are getting a lot bumpier. It’s safer to come in a car with a high clearance My caravan is a bit high and is a 4X4. Which one? I think it’s on the left. Okuoku Yakuro Onsen has become famous and many tourists are visiting, but there are concerns about tourists leaving trash behind and manners such as visiting Yakuro Onsen near private homes late at night. We must be careful too. Fallen trees have been removed and the road has been maintained, but sometimes trees stick out onto the road. Ah, here it is! That ‘s the same kind of car ? ? Ah, he’s in the hot spring! There’s a dog here! Well, I tried not to look… (the car) is in the same way. There’s no place to make a U-turn, so I’ll go ahead. I can make a U-turn here , so I think I’ll go behind . But that person… (isn’t he naked?) He might be walking right now (naked to move the car). The temperature is really good here. The water temperature here is just right, I can’t believe it, about 42 degrees? It feels like it’s slowly seeping in. It’s like a square, and the whole area is covered with deposits, and some parts are like rice fields. It’s surrounded by forest, and when you look up, it’s like the cloudy sky is covering it. Gas is bubbling up from the bathtub with its mouth wide open. It’s a strange sight to see two naked men chatting there. Wow , it ‘s really a good temperature, it feels good. The person I met here said it was his second visit, and last time he stayed in his car here. He ‘s quite a tough guy to stay in his car alone in a place with no lights at night… Looking at blogs, it seems that there are also people staying in tents . There are still many amazing people in the world . It was fun to talk to them about various things. I learned about other natural hot springs, and now I have a new goal. I was told that Onikokuba’s “Crater no Yu” and “Kurotama no Yu” are good. If you know more about them, please let me know in the comments (they are not listed on Google Maps). Thank you, I’m going to “Crater”. Be careful, there is no sign of the entrance or anything … I’m sure you’ll be able to find it somehow lol . I’ll go first! Excuse me, thank you. I’m glad I was able to get revenge, it was a good bath. It’s great to be able to bathe in a bath in this location . I felt bad for my wife. I have to make up for it somehow… I’ll also stop by the nearest Hachikuro Onsen, maybe I’ll meet the old man from last time again . I’m here again. Is the person from before still there? (There is one other person there.) The person who accompanied me told me a lot about Oku-Oku. This time, there was only one bath in Oku-Oku, but if you look at the previous photo, there are two to three baths. This is because the baths are repeatedly blocked and dug up due to sediment flowing in from rain, etc. Apparently the number of baths varies depending on the time of year you go. This person usually comes here but rarely goes to the innermost part. The number of people allowed in the innermost part is limited. Apparently, when horseflies appear, it’s impossible to stay in the bath, so he usually comes here. The water here is warm, so you can take your time, and the amount of water is amazing. This is good enough for everyday use… Hakkuro Onsen. It was a precious bath loved by the locals, so thank you very much. Mamushi-do…shark cartilage? Demonstration sale!! What is it??? On the way to our next destination, we stopped off in front of the Ikarigaseki roadside station and discovered a mysterious shop . It was before opening time so we couldn’t go in, but when we looked it up later, we found out that it was a shop that really sells viper powder . It says that demonstration sale means that they actually crush dried vipers with a hammer into powder in front of the customers to prove that there are no additives. (They also sell soft-shelled turtles.) If you’re interested, please visit. It seems to actually be effective. Ikarugaseki is amazing, and there is a day-trip hot spring here too. This day-trip hot spring is modeled after the Okariya Palace, where feudal lords would stay overnight during their alternate attendance tours. The large bath, with its scent of Aomori cypress, is a thick, colorless, transparent spring water that you can enjoy. There is also a luxurious private bath called the “Lord’s Bath.” It is said that the name comes from the fact that this was once a place where the lords of Tsugaru stayed during the Edo period. There is a large Japanese-style room and a cypress bathtub that can comfortably fit about six people, so you will feel like a lord. The large bath is 400 yen, and the private bath is 1,500 yen per person per hour. From here, we will head further north to the next hidden hot spring. Next time, we plan to visit Aoni Onsen.
