Midnight Knocker (Luke 11:5-8)
Luke 11:5-8 Then Jesus said to them, “Suppose you have a friend and you go to him at midnight and say,”Friend, lend me three loaves of bread. A friend of mine on a journey has come to me, and I have no food to offer him. And suppose the one inside answers, don’t bother me. The door is already locked, and my children and I are in bed, I can’t get up and give you anything.” I tell you, even though he will not get up and give you the bread because of friendship, yet because of your shameless audacity, he will surely get up and give you as much as you need. interior night. You hear a knock at the door. You ignore it because it is the middle of the night. The knocking persists. You get up to do one of two things. One, find out what is up with this midnight knocker. Or two, to get this midnight knocker to just go away. This scenario actually applies to two different people in this story. The per one, the person seeking the bread, and two, the person with the bread. The original midnight knocker was the person showing up at midnight. When he did that and gained access to his friend’s house, his friend became the midnight knocker out looking for food. Apparently, there can be only one. When we read parables, consider that there are different people reading or listening to the parable, and each is taking a different role in the parable. Some are putting themselves in the shoes of the midnight knocker arriving at his friend’s house. Why did he arrive at midnight? It does not appear to be the plan because the person whose house he went to did not have bread for him. So, what happened to him? Was this guy late because he was way laid by robbers? Is this the story, the epilogue of the parable of the good Samaritan? The punchline of this story is that audacity wins the day. We can articulate the likely outcome of trying to get people out of bed at midnight for someone else’s benefit. But we cannot account for is the reaction of normal people, sleepy or not, to people with clearly articulated requests for provision. And this applies to God as well as his children.
