Spring 2025 Dendrobium aphyllum Lazy Chat & Chill Livestream #ninjaorchids
well let’s see if this works We are in
the great outdoors At least for the time being unless everything heats up
then we’re going to move indoors As far as I’m concerned I could see that we are live So if you can hear me then
welcome This is my Dendrobium ailum I’m just going to be quiet because
I’m not sure if I’ve got audio on I can see diddly squat on that screen of my mobile
phone I can’t see anything It’s just black But I have my backup device and let’s see
what happens Anyway if you’re here welcome It’s a beautiful day in southern Spain on
the patio I have this uh stream in vertical format so you can see the whole orchid I know
it’s a little bit awkward but if we were to see the whole orchid in horizontal I would
have to step back very far And that didn’t make much sense Unless I go in very close and
then you don’t see the whole orchid which I don’t know which one is the better of the two
evils Good morning Debbie It’s good to see you Bonjour Julian I’m so happy that you can hear me
and that we are up and running I’m trying to keep my heart rate down It’s been quite a stressful
past 3 weeks and I was very very nervous as per leading up to this stream and literally I just
want to just hang out Either I say something I don’t say something If I say something that
is not exactly PC please forgive me Things have not been 100% And that is why my voice
is also sounding very subdued I’m trying to keep it together here My sight That’s right
It’s what we also always had to say when we were walking into the into the canteen of the
ship with my dad my sight to anybody that was already sitting there So thank you for those of
you that are here Um doesn’t look like it’s very much in focus It’s the best I can do I hope
it looks better at your end than what I’m seeing My other cell phone like I said the
screen is black And it looks like sometimes the transmission is freezing Although I seem to have
everything all right I have all the bars needed and no other devices are using any kind of memory
or data So yeah you just brought a flashback back any was the reply sometimes from the first
engineer Little bit of German banter here This is so cool So I know that we did a Q&A stream in
April where I talked about March and I pretty much shut everything down because of the conditions
and the circumstances But let me just say that um the electric grid has suffered a
huge impact I don’t know whether it was all the bad weather and the huge storms
and all the water of the winter but once I thought everything was going to go and work
well and I was getting back into my groove etc a transformer blew the one down the road
I heard the explosion and I was like “What was that?” So I went outside but I couldn’t see any
fire and nobody was screaming So I thought okay maybe a tire blew but it was different And then of
course the power went out and I just thought yeah that’s the transformer or whatever installation
they have for the grid that provides us here in the neighborhood Anyway that blew up So we
untoward suddenly we had no power again and it was a beautiful sunny day Anyway so they restored
that and I guess to a point just to tide us over until they could do the complete overhaul and
replacement of all the parts etc But there was no notice of that happening It was just like oh
okay we were back up and running after a while and okay that same procedure All right So that
was on a Monday The next Monday we had the major blackout I mean okay nothing can be
done about it And I giggle about it now but I giggle in anxiety because you
can imagine my brain is scrambling It’s just going nuts you know And I know
people are patient and understanding but you know my electricity issues
in the winter We’re in April now What is going on and I don’t know And honestly
I might get my timelines completely wrong Please forgive me It just seems like one blackout after
the other Anyway the blackout was not just us It kind of made me feel a little bit relieved
that it affected several countries but then we didn’t know what was going on I still don’t
know what was going on People blame it on the weather There was a weather dip and some you
know the renewable energy I don’t know there was a fluctuation It got too low too high
whatever I have I can’t explain it when I read it I some quasi understand it but I don’t
get it Anyway 17 hours without power And for somebody that mentally needs to have white noise
constant input or be doing something like maybe filming can’t charge my batteries can’t film
what I can store as footage until I can use it for editing It was a nightmare let’s just say
All righty So we’re back up and running with that And then earlier this week the power went
out again on Monday And I’m telling you I I might I may still have some hair left on
my head It’s not much to comb through now Not because I was pulling it out but the stress
again not knowing the grid was down in our area plus some others Then the grid was back up on
Tuesday I had trust issues at this point I left all my equipment shut down everything out of
the sockets I was so scared that something was going to happen that the surge would be so heavy
Anyway long story short they came to replace all the bits and pieces parts and whatever is needed
for the transformer but they didn’t inform the general public that this was going on By Monday
night we had power back at 8:00 p.m Everything was charged up and everything was like um yeah at
least I had my devices charged batteries charged and in the morning it must have all it must
have gone down again at 300 a.m because when we woke up in the morning no power on Tuesday I
read um the Gisham the the novel the broker from John Gisham twice Not saying I’m an expert
on Western Australian native orchids but I got the book from Julie Sun from Australia I’ve
been p going through the pages of that It’s the size of the King James Bible the the old version
that so that kept me company over all these weeks And what was really concerning was the
little community across beyond the hedge I’m starting to be in tune with the gate
opening and closing and if that gate works why don’t we have electricity so Tuesday
apparently it was an isolated case for my home So of course I had I was down the neck
breathing down the neck so to speak of my landlord What is going on la i don’t think
you understand the gravity of my situation here Anyway on Wednesday my daughter said “There’s
a huge crane and a truck by the trans by the little transformer thing.” I said “Okay goody
That’s what it’s about.” And well that’s it So we’ve been up and running and I figured if I
schedule this stream on a Saturday that at least for the weekend whatever repairs they may need to
do next week if it hasn’t quite fully kicked in and is up and running whatever repairs they may do
they may just do enough so that the communities in this vicinity have electricity for Saturday and
Sunday I don’t know It was uh speculation but here we are So I’m really trying to keep my tone
down because I’m not feeling as calm as I possibly sound Anyway so right let me just check Julian
says “You asked about the fragrance of the Dendrobium Draonus.” It does have one Tangerine is
not what I would call it It’s sweet but chalky if that makes sense Chalky Yeah like powdery but not
in a perfumed sense chalky but powdery in a flat dusty sense if I’m interpreting that correctly
Best I could describe it is reminds me of the addict edication dude Oh medication Okay next
line I’m like huh you lost me Debbie Sanford says “Anths and how much is too much?” First year
moving orchids outside and have Brussola hybrids They’re getting very purple Very purple Just move
them back a little bit into the shade Not deep shade bright shade Get unless you’re having them
on morning sun or only afternoon sun The thing is with Brasopa hybrids they will get that deep red
And it’ll take like five six weeks to get them the green the leaves to green up again You may want to
wherever they are when the sun hits them if they get direct sun is touch the leaves If there’s no
heat you’re fine They can stay where they are It’s just a natural t trait My ascendantum amputhea is
always in bright shade except for winter And she is a deep burgundy She never sees direct sun
unless it’s the cold sun She’s deep burgundy throughout the summer as well So the heat of the
leaves will tell you whether you need to move them back So if that if that is something with the
with the hybrids then just check the temperature of your leaves You’re hearing raw sound on
the patio so I hope it’s going to be okay And Julian says 100 uh 15 gawatt
disappeared in three hours The 3 seconds 3 seconds Now that sounds of
course like a lot but where I would like to know where did that happen where
was it was it in a Spanish major grid that provides everybody that it happened because
you know Portugal was affected to a degree as well It took 17 hours for ours to come back
And the weirdest thing was what was freaking me out was at 2:00 a.m I was looking out and the
street lights were on Some homes had lights on homes that don’t have solar which was another
thing I was taking into consideration They had their lights on and I was still in the dark
peeling the paint off the walls I can’t sleep in silence Just to let you know I need noise
cuz my mind goes to places I don’t want it to go So I I need noise I need to hear a podcast
I can’t do music So the silence is what freaks me out when these things happen in Spain Okay
interesting Now Julian the bearer of all things informative that I am oblivious to in Spain Can
you say where in Spain like was it up north was it more down south here in Anducia where we have
massive planes of solar and wind installations and both Portugal and France were affected
because our grids are interconnected Yes And so so I heard and I thought I don’t know Germany
had a little bit but I don’t I’m not sure I think the south of France was the north of France by
the Spanish border I believe and to a degree the south It was bizarre I’m telling you you know at
least during the pandemic we had um authorities come by with megaphones in their cars giving
updates la asking people either to stay home or stay calm or do whatever right within very very
like a couple of hours of lockdown the authorities were patrolling the streets This happened and
it was sencio Nothing Okay So we could hear it over the radio All righty Whatever But not
a single person not a single law enforcement unawar patrol because of the lights but
they didn’t say anything they didn’t update or anything and I thought
um yeah that’s a bit risky I would say 15 gawatt supply was lacking from the demand our grid did not collapse
because we smart move that was a smart move I was like “No nothing in Germany.” Okay good Because you
know the rumors spread like a wildfire Come on King Let’s move That the rumors spread like
a wildfire that it was Germany all the way up to Romania and to some degree Russia And then of
course people were thinking it was a cyber attack and then the authorities were saying no it’s not
a cyber attack blah blah blah and then you know how do you know so soon but you don’t know why all
these things yes that’s what they were saying that they had um and and then the what was it which
one was it I don’t remember which one but at some point they had to work like 300 100 stations And
of course they have to bring everything back up running bit by bit You can’t throw them all on at
the same time you know Good morning Orchid Ninja Troy son How are you i’m telling you look I grew
up in Kenya okay i am not I’m not like um I’m not a fusspot or a Karen about I don’t have power I
don’t have power I can I know how to manage I mean when my daughter told me the weather report for
the rest of March was going to be one inundation after the other We prepared and we organized
ourselves in such a way I didn’t know food was spoiled The freezer was empty I could I could
hand wash laundry and and so on and so forth right um we had our little go bags if with regards to
showers It was all it was it it was cool All right We only ate legumes that I could you know um soak
overnight and and cook etc My popcorn whatever I’m not a Karen about this because growing up in Kenya
but I’m sorry in the 70s and 80s in Kenya you kind of live with it accept it you know where you’re at
blahy blah Now my life has changed to a degree I’m extremely dependent on the internet Everything I
do is over the internet Be it the ninjas oneon- ons be it you know correspondence be it filming
I need batteries in order to film Even if I don’t have f power I could actually do filming on the
patio and then edit when we’re back up and running Well um the panic stations it’s a lot different
now You know I can still organize a household around it That’s not the issue But sitting in
silence and mentally not being able to cope and do something that’s that’s scary stuff And
then when you don’t have news that makes it even worse The problem is that Spain
is kind of insular on energy grid The FZ connection between France and
Portugal are too small to compensate All right that just goes straight over my head but I guess they’re going to have to
learn some lessons from this Not sure Hey Pixie good to see you Hope you’re doing well And then of course it also gets tiresome
and that’s why I didn’t I just didn’t inform anybody after the this week I
informed the orchid ninjas but I I I mean I it just gets old I can’t do anything
with where I’m out of power I mean it it’s just it just gets old I just thought okay
no news is good news as my dad used to say as well What am I going to say again and
again and again and again it was already getting old in my head tiresome and tedious
The wind was not supposed to be this blustery today but it’s gorgeous I’m not
getting a fragrance out of her just yet I thought she would be she has a
if you get really close to this orchid she does have a nice little rose
kind of fragrance but it’s very very subtle Hardly anything And I don’t
see I thought it would contrast nicer And if I dare if I dare move up you
can see the mount It’s coming together It’s coming together there They’re all in bloom
And as they age they’ll just get longer and longer And eventually they’ll meet the
mother plant At least I hope you can see that Just going to hold it there until I
see it happening cuz there’s always a lag There we go I can now see
it all happening on my other phone That’s the idea of the ninja Not the ninja
the a film curtain Eventually that’ll all fill in And I hope we’re still here on the patio to
be able to witness that I mean it’s making good progress It’s It’s coming along as expected I’m
happy with the length of the cane on the right on to your left The camera is a bit reversed Normally
when you grid when your grid lacks power we export from our grid but the lines are too small for
15 gawatt percentage D We’ve lost sound How so how so testing testing Check check check I can’t
see anything That screen is black You can’t hear me Okay Oh dear Oh dear Oh dear Hang on a second Hang on a second I’m just going to keep babbling
Let me know if you can hear me again Hang on a second Hang on a second Or five or six I can’t
move very fast The legs are not paying attention Is my transmitter heating up it doesn’t feel
hot Did we lose connection for a bit there did we lose connection oh my gosh Sound is in and
out Okay Well I’m going to face the transmitter I was Although that shouldn’t be doing it
Can you hear the wind is it because of the winda push comes to shove i’m going
to the desktop and I can chat with you outside me can hear me better Maybe I should just face everything My ar hot even
though the sun is shining on it Um I’ll pick this stream up indoors
and we can chat inside cuz I’m not going to be sitting out here
testing testing being blind You can sing a song because I was thinking of doing some live streams just walking around
the patio with you guys at some point Still choppy Okay I wonder why Thank you for the feedback Let me just Okay that’s the mic is out Now it’s back in I put the mic
I took the mic out Put it back in Mama Everything is fine Is it better look like I I Googled yesterday if I can if need be Um if I can keep the
camera out here Now de Debbie also said it’s still choppy Um Julian so there’s
it’s not just it’s not just you I hope the All righty From what I’m gathering here
I’m losing connection every once in a while I just saw a little the little orange bar peek
through and I can see the bar I can’t read it but I know when that orange bar comes that means
the connection is lost Connection as in the Wi-Fi So I’m going to stop talking when
the connection when I see that orange bar I’ll just stop talking Oh goody A cloud respite Let me see Your Dendrobium hasn’t bloomed this year Anya Gibbasa And the way you wrote that
I am assuming that she bloomed last year Huh are you seeing any sign
that there’s nothing no nothing If you would like to investigate
that maybe maybe we can do that How old is it etc etc How old is it
did it get a temperature drop it doesn’t really need one to bloom It doesn’t need
to lose its leaves to bloom That’s nothing It only loses its leaves in cold climates
during the winter like mine But they will bloom in Florida without those radical
temperature drops over an extended period of time It’s just they will bloom
and there will still be leaves on them Can you hear me can I can see that we are
we should be up and running I don’t know what to I mean I’ve got
enough background noise that I don’t even need to do the talking
There’s enough Kella going on Oh goody Yay No sign this year Huh That is very very strange She had plenty of light I guess nothing in
her care has changed Why would you change anything if you had her blooming last year
you just you just repeat what you do all the time So thank you Debbie Appreciate
that I hope you’re doing well I don’t want to go into too much detail but that’s a
loaded question So I hope you’re doing well You know I’ve never not had mine bloom
Even the first time she arrived with little itty bitty sticks the first uh the
year after I’ve had her she bloomed straight away It could be light or temperature
related Yeah but I don’t I mean Anya unless you’ve changed something from last
year her location or something It shouldn’t happen I mean this is why I’m always so excited
about this orchid First of all the blooms won’t last until any more than another 6 days
maybe Maybe depending on what the weather throws at us If it gets really windy they’ll get
stressed and they’ll look tired very quickly So um I just get excited about this orchid because
her first nubbins showed on the 13th of February and that was a day before Valentine’s Day and I
was so so excited and that’s what I look for as I’m coming out of the the winter It’s this orchid
is sort of my guide you know on my mind It’s the little milestone I need to keep going to to keep
to to not fall into complete despair Fantastic I’m very happy to hear that Debbie Excellent
Thank you No not necessarily What it needs is uh if you like it’s it needs dew like the
watering quantity it needs on um let’s say daily or depending on on on what kind of humidity
it has around it It’s just to replicate the dew I water mine throughout the winter Now okay
granted if it’s raining six seven days in a row and it’s 99% humidity this is not getting
any water but let’s just say on a normal Spanish winter normal Spanish winter we have maybe 70%
humidity I I water it every every day if it’s windy even if it’s cold wind And I and I water
it every 3 days if for example uh there is no wind So I I I just pretend I’m the Jew I
don’t I don’t let mine go dry for long at all Now mine grows outside I get it But the same
would apply indoors Even if you have it in a cooler room and if you’re going to pretend to be
the Jew you have to give it a little bit of water accordingly You have to give it a little bit
of water accordingly Um just to simulate the dew Does it need high light during the winter
no That the the light re it shouldn’t be in perpetual darkness but the light isn’t
the issue The light is important for the energy as they grow As the canes grow
light is super important Um during the winter it’s not like they need high super
high light on bare canes Usually they say it’s the temperature drop the stress of
the cold temperatures that forces blooms But then again I I say look at the ones in
Florida that bloom and the leaves are still on them So that’s where I’m like yeah we can’t go
with the rule of they need to get a temperature drop So something something somewhere changed there And I hope Anya you’re seeing maybe some
nubbins at the base showing signs of new growth Because now round about now Okay I’m a little bit
ahead Maybe because I’m I’m in southern Spain but not really after our winter But I’ve already
got new growths coming at the base of all the canes And especially on the mount the cake is
on the monster mount on the top They are so much more advanced in their new growth than the
mother plant is So I’m kind of freaking out that maybe my mount here needs to get aired out That
I need to actually strip back some canes even if they’re still nice and plump in order for there
to get access into all the canes that are back there for new growths to have light and room to
grow I’m very concerned I It’s the first time I am not seeing new growths where they should
be I only see two from where I’m sat three There should be a I should see a whole gaggle
of new growth On the other hand my little 2019 cake mount there they should also be showing new
growth And there’s nothing at the base So maybe I’m just like why is my monster mount already you
know 5 cm 2 in long the new growths and down here we’re we’re straggling They’re both in the same
they’re all in the same phase of blooming Super interesting But maybe if this continues I’m going
to have to I’m not going to thin out any of the viable canes at this point This is something
I’m going to observe and see how things go But if next year we don’t have this kind of a
spill and it’s just sporadic then I’ll know it’s time to thin out some of the even viable canes
which is not something I want to do because of the fact that they provide a lot of energy And
if they only if they take like seven years to degrade all by themselves there’s a reason
for that And I shouldn’t be stripping an orchid of its energy source just because whatever
Anyway all these things are now sort of cruising through my brain as I water the orchid and I’m
inspecting where are you going where are your growths so I don’t know I hope that Anna if
she has any questions she can always email me or even leave a comment under the
ailum orchid care which oh my goodness I hope I linked it It should be linked in
the description I may have forgotten that So yeah see the banging of that gate that was always
my cue I hate it when I’m filming out here cuz I always have to stop talking or I feel as though I
should stop talking let all that noise go away and then continue talking But when that gate is silent
at least I know it’s not an isolated just our house She’s gorgeous Pixie She’s absolutely gorgeous You have patience and you’re waiting
for the next time Okay Does yours already have new growth i just like a lot of feedback from
different um countries different styles of growing Is yours potted up etc Anya I love that
kind of information It it broadens my horizons you know And all of a sudden I’ve got all these
comments I think my chat glitched here I was babbling away and y’all were typing and I couldn’t
see diddly squat The last comment I had was from Debbie Okay Anna says “I think it’s a young plant
It has seven canes New canes this year are three.” Yeah but it bloomed last year So even if you
only Let’s Let’s get Let’s just say you only get five spikes or something Very strange interest
It’s interesting though In Hawaii these kinds of dendroas are also known as hono hono Joe how are
you that is interesting Can you elaborate as to why excuse me I need to move into the shade just
a little bit Can you elaborate why they’re called hono hono uh which means I’m further away from
the transmitter but I should be able to go 300 m from this transmitter So poof Just let me know
if the audio is okay Could be temperature though Indoors it’s sometimes a bit early question
of exactly that’s the thing sometimes if these orchids are grown indoors they do start earlier
same as in Florida in Florida these are films are now out of bloom they bloom so much sooner
because their temperatures get so much warmer faster so to kick this outside with nobody’s for
a temperature drop but don’t keep it as dry that’s right that is correct Don’t keep it as dry I do
not believe that there is a single orchid out in nature that hasn’t got any form of access to water
whatsoever as we would say in cultivation There’s always always some kind of access to water and a
lot of it has to do with humidity and dew There’s a lot of dew when their temperatures drop at night
and then come back I used to play golf and we’d tee off at 7:30 in the morning and on a November
the dew it my shoes were soaked as if I had been walking in a puddle and that is what the roots
pull from the air and whatever sticks around them and indoors if the heating starts a
few days earlier than previous year it might not have dropped at the
right time that is correct as well whereas I’ve never thought of that Julian son I’ve
never thought that there was a right or a or wrong timing for the temperature to drop I thought that
if there is a temperature drop regardless then blooming will be provoked Let’s say Phelinopsis
orchids Let’s just go with what you’ve just said Let’s say Phelinopsis orchids It’s uh now growing
season for them or blooming season Well for those of you lucky with Phelinopsis in bloom mine aren’t
but um if for example July August I were to put them in an air conditioned room and keep them
at a low temperature with bright light in July August would I then not have the spikes starting
September October as opposed to November December i mean I can’t I don’t use AC I wouldn’t test
it but it’s a thought I would have thought if an orchid needs a temperature drop as long as
it’s in vegetative growth it won’t matter While it’s resting it also doesn’t matter if you’re
going to say 6 weeks in the winter it needs a temperature drop Does it matter if it’s October
through December or December through February january Huh that’s a good thought Nubbins in my
case start in February So the latest temperature drop if that is the trigger the actual trigger
which with this specific orchid it isn’t but with others it could be the latest would be
December Huh Joe says “My Dendrobium Penguang has been in bloom since February and there’s
10 more on the way.” Well done Those are not easy Those black cane blackhaired ends are not
easy They are beautiful Green flowers are all my jam That red lip divine Well done They are not
easy especially throughout the winter That’s awesome I think it’s done blooming from the old canes since now it’s focusing
on two new ones from last year Fantastic Three new growths are already coming on
yours this year Okay You see how far behind me I am because I’m I’m going through I’m trying
to take the comments in and do some kind of deduction because I think it’s so interesting
when other perspectives come my way Usually when I’m responding to comments like Julian
puts into chat I have time to sit back and reflect and then you know think all of it through
So if this takes a little bit longer I apologize My unrecognis flowered for the first time
Congratulations And it got kicked off the room because while the fragrance is described as
pleasant I do not find burnt rubber as a pleasant smell Huh no Burnt rubber is horrible Do you know I still have my OG Leonus
we know we’ve I lost my other one I still have it I’m thrilled Well done Congratulations That is
fantastic Debbie says “Lots of dew this morning in Minnesota 44 degrees this.” Oh coffee gets
cold quickly Tell me about it Tell me about it Yikes O I hope that it warms up for you I’ve
been seeing that um Wyoming had snow two or three days ago I’m like “Yeah no nope Nope nope.”
And that would be a setback for me mentally just like with these recent power cuts were it
doesn’t work I tried Okay I’m reflecting on I guess we’re reflecting back on temperature
drops etc It might be the season for the next time provided you provide a drop at the same
time next year but will not make the foul flower this year if it No it probably wouldn’t flower
this year But you see for example seeing as my fowls are zero spikes right i have so many
nodes available where no spikes are growing If I had the chance and the opportunity
to experiment on that I would throw three of them into a cold air conditioned room with
bright light and see what happens If they don’t get like a kick and go like uh you know cuz yeah
they’ll they’re on they’re starting new leaves as per but they’ve got plenty of nodes from last year
If there are no nodes then of course I get it They need to actually get vegetative growth And there
was also a thing about you can trick the hormones etc in order to end induce blooming But no
no you’re messing with the orchid’s internal clock Hormones will not activate a spike
or anything like that if the conditions aren’t XY Z And definitely if there
are not vi if there aren’t any viable nodes it will not make the six Okay Six I don’t know
what you mean by six Julian son Don’t know what you mean there So let me just check the transmitter Oh we should be okay Nothing is melting Somebody said last year that this orchid
could be a bridal bouquet You just wrap the mount in tissue and or in ribbon or whatever and
have the bride walk down the aisle with it I can’t get that visual out of my head because
Yeah Excuse me Is my bridal bouquet blooming yet i’m like yeah no We need to postpone
your wedding by 48 hours You okay with that imagine having your wedding set depending
on when an orchid is blooming Orchid Ninja Bubson Hello samurai How are you good morning
We’re not sure that the temperature drop really triggers spike induction past the first time
only because they are grown in constant high temperature Good to see you Thank you for your email I’m I’m I’m thinking about it I’m thinking about it It’s like what are the priorities
oh six months of vegetative growth before Okay they just entered a
rest mode without flowering I got you 6 months of vegetative growth Well yeah May
June July August September mine get like 5 and 1/2 months where even the light is somewhat okay
and then by October it’s not good enough Appreciate that reaction Thank you tapping
one back to whoever that was Appreciate it If there’s anybody that can
give me some feedback on that I’m surprised that I’ve
still got sun on my equipment here The transformer is warming up
a little bit The transformer the transmitter Can you hear the cars
going by and all that is that Inquiring minds want to know I do try to listen back to
my own streams but sometimes I’m like “Oh my goodness I can’t do it.” Editing
hearing my own voice is one thing but my own streams Okay my chat seems to be glitching
again So if anybody’s typing I’m sorry Oh goody Like I said I just need to if if anything
the camera is in the shade that’s fine Can’t see the screen because of the glare but if
anything I can always I can always take the transmitter off and then go inside and
at least talk to you guys from the desk No background noise That is awesome Just a bird
Yeah we’ve got lots of birds cheering around here They’re making babies They’re having
fights They need to stay out of my orchids They’re digging up things They think they’re
looking like worms And they’re taking all my moss away for their nests They’ve exposed roots
that were all nicely tucked away growing in moss and those roots are perishing because yeah it’s
too dry without that moss where they grew into little video coming up about that because
people have said you know your orchid tops no no no the moss is looking nasty La dah
And I’m like I’m keeping that moss There’s plenty of roots in there and if I take the moss
away the roots are going to die And here we are Moss is gone Roots were beautiful in there
And the birds took the moss And my roots are dying Thank you for the feedback I
appreciate that So maybe I’m just making a bigger deal out of it I’m so
paranoid about background and noise pollution So yeah I was thinking that charging a a phone and
doing what I’m doing now but walking around the patio on a live
stream Of course it would be basically this time of day I can’t do it any later
Sometimes I can do it like early evening like in the summer and we can just hang out
for anybody that has time because my repot streams like I did last year I don’t think
I can do that again Um my legs can’t take it I’m wondering how you know the standing
the awkward position of bending with a repot the focus the the talking watching chat
water electronics and physically and all that I don’t think I can mentally focus on
everything while trying to stay on my feet I’ve been I’ve been trying to think it through
in my head how that would work but for the time being I’m not confident But doing slow walks
like holding you and trying to keep you steady I do have a gimbal but it’s heavy And I’ve with
my carpal tunnel the gimbal and the phone but doing slow walks like with the tripod I think
we can do little every once in a while just get on a live stream and show you stuff talk
to you about things see what’s going on cuz I also have to limit myself as to when I’m
sitting down and for how long It’s a whole thing So these long videos like
patio tour by the time that is out things change so quickly So I’m
considering doing walkabout live streams Just a thought Let me know what you
think if that’s something that would interest you Sometimes around this time of day and as
the light Oh we can also do dusk walkabouts There’s no problem with that because the only
thing that is is stopping me like 4 5 6 p.m is because of Siliano He has to come outside
and he goes by the sun So he comes out later and later and later until October when he
starts to come out earlier and earlier and earlier And of course he needs to be in his jungle gym if I am to do a walkabout
while he while he’s out and about Okay could be cool All right we wouldn’t
be in vertical Although YouTube is pushing for people to go live vertically I think it’s a
nonsense when it comes to orchids and showing orchids cuz right now I feel like I should pick
up the tripod and walk around with you guys But this is a film watch and we can do the other one
another time because there’s also something nice like me I’m I’m Yeah I’m sitting here I’m
feeling a little bit exposed as in you know eventually I’ll just put some music on and
walk away and leave this up and running But uh just to check on a few things or go and make
myself a cup of coffee But um I like also uh I feel like I’m looking at my Dendrobium Victoria
vagina I’m looking Oh no No that’s tomorrow Oh yeah and that’s why I don’t have a video out
It was all up and running on Monday For Monday I was all prepared The Orchid Ninjas had their
scale video It was up there on Tuesday I was going to just double check it with a fresh mind
I don’t like to upload straight after editing I like to leave it for about 8 hours and then look
at the whole thing again before I decide nah it’s good to upload I could have done it before Blah
blah blah And of course then this whole power issue came I was so ahead of the game at the
beginning of the week I cannot tell you I was proud of myself I was going to crank out like four
or five videos and then have them all scheduled Well that didn’t happen Just checking something
Okay so um doing patio tours and editing through them I think we may just do streams and see
who can make it and talk through a few things because I do pick on the same orchids a lot
on patio tours I find I do that a lot for some reason Maybe they’re more active or there still
has a problem that I want to still update you on And I’m always picking on the same orchids And
despite many losses this winter there are still some that are struggling that I would rather see
you struggle before they’re tossed or at their recovery And it’s all a time factor Samurai Bob
says “You like the idea of a walkound.” All righty All righty That makes two That makes two So we’re
in the majority now Definitely in the majority Because YouTube wants people to watch lives
on phones but I find an annoyance I find it an annoyance on a phone I do too I don’t like
the vertical format at all I I I remember last year and I think Julian’s son has been Oh my
goodness Julian you have no idea how grateful I am Your support and your patience You’ve
been through it all with me I’m telling you Um last year I managed to give uh troubleshoot
around the insistence of going live vertically and I could manufacture the phone to go
horizontal and I was all gung-ho about a stream and suddenly during as the stream started
my phone was on horizontal and it told me you it said to me rotate your phone to vertical blah
blah blah blah blah blah eyes and then not fe to switch the phone to horizontal
except you’ll probably you probably won’t see much if I change the camera now but um Now why is it showing that i didn’t
do that Whatever you’re seeing just now that popped up on screen I did
not do that I wasn’t touching anything Ah my phone Oh gosh Sorry Sorry
Hang on a second My phone is heating up Okay it’s going to get a bit jiggly Sorry
we’re on a closeup It’s no bueno Heating the phone up No bueno Hang on a second Tripod
adjustment in the works Sorry about the audio I didn’t mute Sorry about me groaning
in your ear Okay let me see if that’s in focus Let me also get a tissue
and wipe the lens cuz I touched I touched the camera I think Hang on a second I’m trying not to groan in your ear You’re getting a little bit of a
wipe If you can still hear me that is Yeah it’s the live background And that came off I
wasn’t touching anything It came on by itself And it just got me to thinking that maybe the phone is
heating up and the thing is doing its own thing So I hope that doesn’t continue because it’s now we
are bang up close up and I have to check and see if we are even in focus of it I know Julian right
go Thank you Debbie for that feedback I appreciate it Are we in focus i can’t see squat Oh Julian
that one stream with my cat Leantha Siamese doll Kiwi I’ll never forget that stream Oh gosh I don’t
know what happened there Why nobody could see it And you went out of your way to find to find
it to find the scream and say “I’m here You’re alive.” But I couldn’t see it anywhere And I was
like “How how panic stations but you know here we are I so appreciate you.” And I’m bright red Every
time I think of these things I just go beat red Um something else I wanted to do
before I sat down I My iced tea is turning into sun tea Into warm
sun tea My lucky Just stay Stay All righty I think it’s rather that
the phone disconnected from the upload Oh Oh you think that’s why
that background came on interesting Well we’re up close Let me take the
chat out Let me zoom in here Are we We’re not in focus though Does it
look like it’s in focus at your end maybe I’m too close of it I wonder
if we can improve that a little bit as the sun moves We can scoot the tripod back a
little bit Teeny tiny bit See if we can get that in focus Can you move thank you I have
to tell my dogs to move When I’m on the move they got to move They can’t be around my
feet Let’s see if that improves a little bit The focus of it cuz I am on 720 So it’s probably not going
to improve much My plan only covers 720 Not 1080 Anyway it’s raining blooms Just be grateful you’re online Yeah No it’s not One one day One
day One day this channel will be able to afford 1080 or 4K when it comes
to the plans for reream but not now For the time being this is what
it is And it’s going to just have to do I could try and scooch back a little
bit more but it probably makes it anyway Just leave it Stop touching
things I’m so conscious of things I also haven’t put my engra in place yet the way
they should be because physically I’m just too freaked out how to get the crestwood into the
hedge because I can’t take on that position I can’t get down on my knees So I think I’m going to
have to trim the roots in order to position them The bossery is right here next to me on the
staging area by the hedge You see all these things i kind of want to show you and
I think that’s what I will do with the walkabout stream And I’ll talk to talk
you through everything But because the bossery cannot be yet in the deep south
because I can’t have anything around the ungra around the crustwood until it’s
by the hedge and settled and sorted overexposed huh you think I just I didn’t mess with
the settings of the camera So that’s unfortunate I just I’m using my daughter’s Android Her spare one for this Android is so
much easier I never thought I would say that Um yeah Android is so much easier So I’m using
hers through the browser on the reream software and I I didn’t mess with the settings Huh Oh
well just don’t zoom in Okay Look at it in small Yeah I think that’s what we’ll do next week I’ll take some footage I’ll take some footage of how it is now
in case I’m able to get the crest with into the hedge during the coming
week At least we have that as a reminder And I’ve got my mimicila to the left of
me as well because it was rotting just like the uh prismacarpa was one of the biggest biggest
growths of last year that had the spike which frazzled up It didn’t amount to anything It
had the same exact look and texture at the ryome that my prismarpa had I’m freaked out I
may lose this orchid I’ve got dragon’s blood in the cut you see And that’s all the things that I
wanted to film but couldn’t because I didn’t have um anything to charge batteries with
So I don’t have footage of that cut But um I hope the dragon’s blood and oh my goodness
the amount of cinnamon would have been enough for like 10 apple pies I don’t know I hope
it’s uh it’s not going to affect the rest of the orchid I’m very very doubtful though
cuz that rot spreading is nasty and it’s quick And it annoys me because this orchid the
murmurophila finally was coming at least big enough to produce a spike Whether I would have
enough light during the winter for it to bloom or not I didn’t care Just live you know But
um she was a gift And if she goes I’ll be very upset Or a kind of collab live repot How would
you like that to come together i yes I still have my twinkle Um the twinkles I I would I
would say are when people say they’re easy then their conditions are correct I consider an
ailum an easy orchid because I just take care of it and it does what it does So for some
people an orchid like this could be tricky A Victoria Regina could be tricky So for me
those are easy orchids because my conditions are exactly what they like with the exception
of course the dry humidity Okay Now nobody my environment isn’t that perfect but they’ll
they they’ll do The twinkle is tricky because it is so susceptible to rot while it likes a
lot of water and it needs a lot of humidity So don’t you know like I struggled for three
years to get Phelinopsis orchids to grow in semihydroponics and everybody said it’s so easy
Lea selfwatering phallinopsis they dig it Okay Why wasn’t it working for me so um it is it it depends
when somebody something’s easy then please don’t think you’re doing something wrong But I was going
to grow mine potted in lea and selfwatering And I was going to prove a point to Michael McCarthy
that it can be done And Michael McCarthy from the day one said “They want to be mounted They
don’t do well in pots.” And I’m like “Hold my beer.” I was wrong I was wrong I lost two out of
my three But my last twinkle Yep she’s doing fine She’s got a bit of a curly leaf on her new growths
because of the cold temperatures she had but I put her on a mount to rescue her from next to nothing
She’s doing fine Twinkles have very very thin cuticles around all their structures Not just
because they’re small and whatever You can have a small orchid like a miniature catlia and the
cuticle is super duper thick and resilient right any orchid and twinkles are in that category that
have a thin protective cuticle that can bruise get damaged easily or whatever Milton meltonas fall
into that category Miltonopsis All these ones with a thin cuticle they’re susceptible to rot and
it may not be anything you’ve done wrong Even a bite out of an in from an insect or whatever Uh
there there’s nothing Water gets in there and it’s done It it spreads very very quickly My issue was
scale with my with this one The other ones was the setup Mimic Kafila and you it’s
like with Eniga they refuse to root for me Well you mentioned Mumafila
My tibiscinus is a bane It’s a bane in my existence My Tomsoniana is doing
okay It’s okay The m the tibiscinus If I get the funds I am going to buy a big slab
of cork and I’m going to last harrah throw that the pieces of mimicila I may salvage onto the
cork I don’t see why it shouldn’t do well in lea and selfwatering The Tomson is absolutely
loving it My mimicila started to decline last year summer and I’m like why why so I left it
outside this winter I just thought “Okay I can’t be I can’t be physically moving that orchid in
and out.” And many other orchids weren’t moved in and out Some orchids had to just stay outside
and I tried to protect them from the elements as best as possible Now I know mimicila can go low
if kept dry So that’s what I played with That’s sort of the ratio So I would flush it every once
in a while and let it go quasi dry somewhat dry But you’re absolutely right Same here in
cichlas I’m I’m surprised that they’re not rooting That’s that’s a surprise Julian
cuz normally they’re not shy on the roots The thousand leer you need the
heat or at least bottom heat Yes 100% And that’s why when people ask me about fowls
and lea right now I always tell them keep the roots nice and warm Even though I don’t
keep mine warm but I understand that 100% now Gosh I have so much work
to do with my fowls So much work They’re all coming out of their pots
and whatever I think I figured out what I could do to secure them without the
stupid steak And I don’t know what I think I figured that out It’s just I have
to get to it It’s just one of those things in my head I’m like “Oh my goodness
how am I going to physically cope?” think it’s just a thing about getting the umbrella up checking the forecast that
there’s not too much wind and just doing it I poo The IBA mine is the IBA IA The mimicila or the encyclia I’m very surprised How is your brasavola
growing are you happy with it at this point i know it’s been a long time since we you
mentioned it So just checking I haven’t heard anything So I’m thinking that everything’s good
Joe says “My moniopsis is in double spike now I thought it missed the blooming season I was under
the impression that they bloom from mature but it’s growing from the unfinished third one.” Yes
some will do that That’s cool I like zygopilums You don’t have to wait for a mature growth It’s awesome Summer rest is basically Yeah
Just make sure that you keep them away from bright light and high humid uh
high temperatures They don’t like it They don’t like it warm at all
The mimokafila is the albarea Okay Albaorea Um yeah If anything I think that’s what
I’ll do to save this orchid and keep her in the collection I’m going to have to chuck it on a
mount See what happens The breasters are growing slow May I ask maybe you’ve told me I I’ve
forgotten but how long have you had it i felt as though mine grew very very slow the
first three years and all of a sudden it’s like I can’t stop them They’re doing things
that surprise me Oh my tupe or latta is Oh my goodness I wish I hadn’t lost that fourth
growth over the winter cuz when it was time to bring that orchid inside there it was working
on another two growths but winter hit and I must have compromised the growth when I was carrying
the orchid inside I don’t that I don’t know but it seemed to have kinkedked a bit So I put a
splint on but that didn’t work because that would have been all four growths now would be in
bud It’s going to be insane From a risome that had nothing except an attempt at growing four
growths Crazy Crazy It’s the second year Okay Well I hope it picks up for you the way mine did
because mine were very slow out of the gates and I thought “Oh well great.” That’s why last year I
was so surprised I was like first of all how long do you plan to grow as in your needles your your
leaves they were getting longer and longer and longer And I was and then I was thinking you know
how fast they grew And then another two growths came out And I was just so surprised last year
my perini that lives outside all year round Same thing It didn’t stop growing actively throughout
the winter It continued which was the first time ever That is so bizarre I only have one bud coming
out of it but it I I had new growth throughout the winter and then of course I lost a couple of them
because sometimes I had to water it and you know they just failed They aborted simply because the
conditions weren’t ideal But it it wouldn’t stop And now it’s of course in season It’s just
going to grow again and again It’s awesome So I hope that that happens with yours The zagana
which refused to flower made a giant spike That’s great From the base without any leaf That’s
awesome So that’s an old growth I’m assuming it’s an old growth that is producing a spike
and a new growth has not shown up to produce a spike That’s crazy Interesting and crazy Yeah Joe seeing as you’re putting some
orchids outside this summer if you’re still here and if not that’s fine I’m just going to put
it out there Do not put your Miltonopsis outside Oh hey Joe Oh no Relish in it Just keep a
mental note of what you did in order to do for it to do that so that you can
just repeat Don’t change anything from now on Clearly clearly what you did
works So don’t change anything But as you’re still here don’t bring it in
Hey amigga Mia Vina Fabita Fernanda how are you isn’t she gorgeous isn’t she gorgeous we’re
in vertical because we started the stream with the tripod way back so that the full orchid
could be in view but everything was heating up So I’ve just pushed it forward a little
bit in the shade And as the sun gives me a chance I’ll just move her back and back But
you know there will be a video as [Laughter] per Oh that’s great though Julian That’s interesting I’ve never seen that
on a ziggonia but who cares right so yeah if you if you if you scroll back
if you I don’t know maybe you have rewound somewhat around the beginning you can see
the whole thing Even my monster mount is in bloom The keis it’s it’s a film central
here Remember when I sent you Fernanda you don’t have a [Applause] perini a dendrobium
perini So I sent you some keis I had no idea perini was the synonym for a film I’ll never
forget that you made me aware that I have a dendrobium film I bought her as a perini I
felt a fool I felt a little bit like a fool I hope you’re doing well Fernanda Thank you
so much for having a lookie Appreciate you Joe says “I remember using a bloom booster 113515
once or twice I could have bloomed It could have bloomed anyway I would not know now But then just
keep up with your bloom booster It doesn’t matter Those numbers don’t hurt the orchid.” Unless you
want to test it out and say “Nah next time I’m just not going to do it.” But I wouldn’t You know
what i’m about to fall out of my chair I am about to fall out of my chair I’m sitting here Like I
said we’re going to do walkabout live stream This would be the moment Hang on a second How much
cable have I got all righty Um I don’t know how I can move everything My Renant Sunrise has a
spike This is an OG orchid that arrived in 2018 I never expected it to bloom for me because
I realized I had bitten off more than I could chew The orchid looks a a diabolical situation
Hard to keep the roots alive wanting roots to go into the pot We lowered her recently and now
I’m seeing a root tip on a lea bead I hope it doesn’t collapse on me But anyway these things
would all be in a walkabout live I would stop I would show you I would get my sprayer
and just mist that lea bead a little bit so it doesn’t sap the water out of my root tip
Hang on a second Oh my goodness If this is for real my ascaentum didn’t bloom this season even
though we had a spike because it got rained out So it just frazzled up and aborted My catrina
didn’t bloom even though it stayed outside this winter which it shouldn’t have Huh Catrina No
No No don’t do as I do Satrina should have been inside all winter but I couldn’t bring this
orchid in and out so I thought light might be the better way to go as opposed to no light cuz
I lost my renantha monachica Anyway she should have spiked if nothing else because a she’s had
plenty of light and if she didn’t like that the temperatures the stress of the low temperatures
should have induced the blooming Not because she needs low temperatures to bloom but it was
just very stressful for her Nothing Anyway um give me a minute Give me a minute We’re going
to do something just But I’m not going to do a complete walk around I’m just This I have to
show you because y’all are here This is a first I am Oh no I damaged my polyanthem cane Oh boo I
knew something was poking me in the back earlier Oh well hang on a second Let me just mist that one
root tip I don’t want that lea with the Okay wait wait wait From a distance Don’t get close From a
distance Oh this is exciting You see these three orchids down here the Asca Centrum Renan Catrina
and the Renant Sunrise They’re waiting to get into the deep south But I have to physically
be able to do something with a crestwood and I am not able So I was actually thinking should I
bother my daughter she would help However there’s not enough space for two in that corner for what
needs to be done Anyway all right What we’re going to do Oh my goodness I can’t believe it Even
if she doesn’t bloom and then I don’t know if Fernanda is going to stay here just for another
five minutes I will show you my mimikafila my mimoka catlia sorry Louise folks okay we are
on the move I won’t be looking at chat for a hot minute hang on a second let me just unravel
a little bit more of the extension cord we go I see and okay guys we’re on the move just cover up
because I clean Oh that was not good I cleaned the patio Um what do you see and we’re back We’re back We’re back We’re back Hang on
a second What is my phone doing not the one on the Hang on a second What are you seeing oh okay
You’re seeing my my sprayer cuz my backup device is acting up All righty As we are in the shade
how am I going to turn you oh here Sorry I don’t want to touch the lens Okay we’re going to go
down And what are you seeing okay Yes All right Okay we’re back Hang on a second I’m bringing
the orchid to you Maybe I should have done that first but this is a good little walk through
This gives me an idea as to maybe my walking live streams are going to have to huh I
have to maybe get a routter backpack or something Hang on a second Right Right Okay I’m on a mission
here I shall not be denied Showing you a spike that has never happened before All righty
Looks like we’re up and running for the one and the one time only Okay right there I hope that’s
in focus Right there The only way I know is when I get back to the other device And that is
a first That is a first First Look at those roots Would you please grow into the pot this way
would you please grow into the pot i mean maybe one Okay So now to check the feedback after all that Hey Samurai Julie son Hello Hello No
details I hope you’re okay Thank you for stopping by through your busy schedule Yeah I lost
connection there for a minute Okay So now I have to wonder now I have to think about the walkabout
live streams how we’re going to do that because I’m not far away from the router here and I have
a router booster not far from me and you we still lost connection I’m going to do my due diligence
and just check if I can go on on a stream with 4G I have to Google things That looks like a spike
doesn’t it and I’m just sitting here and these three are still needing to go into the deep south
I’m just sitting here and I’m like “Oh I’m about to fall out of my chair.” That would be well don’t
know what to tell you if she blooms Oh it would have been nice to get some of those roots into the
pot But here is here’s me just seeing my spike on this orchid for the first time even though she
looks like a rat But uh I’m fussing about the roots They’re gorgeous for the time being though
Okay the weirdest part is that I bought it in flower several years ago We’re talking about your
zygonia The spikes were coming from the middle of the new growth So it’s not the plant itself Yeah
that’s how my zygenia bloomed as well like the zygopedilums Um they’re so nice because they
will produce the spike before the growth even has to mature But to have a spike coming out
of a bulb that’s awesome With no leaf fantastic went Oh that’s shopping for food The
things you need to do I don’t do any of that anymore I eat popcorn
with a yellow leaf A pop Oh yeah Okay And now I see what you’re
saying I was asking what do you see okay This is super exciting I’m thrilled
And you heard it here first with me today the 10th of May Somebody’s somebody’s got
a birthday somewhere So happy birthday if anybody’s listening to this on replay or on
the day And it’s the 10th of May Joe says “I always wonder how I get orchids with roots
wrapped around the pot Only a couple from a catia have two or three that stick to the side
of the ceramic orchid pot Only a couple from a catlia have two or three that stick to the
side of the ceramic pot to the side to the outside So the root circling usually happens if
the inner pot has a lip That’s why I really like the some of the orchid pots that uh some of our
orchids now come in and you can order them online the transparent ones They’re just flat So the
orchids so the roots don’t even come up on any kind of a lip I don’t have those pots All my inner
pots have a lip and then the circling begins Most annoying That’s right Julian son My sesa
how am I going to be be watering this first of all actually I’ve already got a bigger
basket for it I want it to be more stable It’s lost several leaves over the winter but all
the roots that it’s grow it it’s it’s grow none of them go into the pot And the one that on
its own grew into the pot it died back It was a brand new root two years ago going heading
straight down into the pot doing absolutely great And over the winter it died back And that
was the winter of two years ago And everything else now gh what a nightmare I do put water
into the dish in the hopes that whatever’s in there is still viable but it’s going to get
harder and harder to keep this orchid happy the taller it gets And you can’t manipulate them
They come out as tough as steel There’s no manipulation During winter one had a root
growing up on the underside of the leaf Yes I had a cat to do that as well Yeah I was
like I have a bit little short on that Yeah you’re doing it [Laughter] wrong And also now I
have I have a Maxima I’m desperate desperately trying to protect and save And I don’t know a
little seedling Maxima that hasn’t been doing well but I need to get her into lava rock
Seedlings and uh the conditions and winter It’s going into lava rock But um it’s like the
same thing Why are you going that way go down go down I need these roots in the pot So we’ll
be changing that at some point And the sooner the better because their roots are already a
little bit longer than I would like them to be Yep it’s a thing Especially going up
the underside of a leaf just following its trail I have two other seedlings in lava
rock doing great But do you think the roots are going in the pot i might as well mount
those things but of course I can’t mount them They pass through a wooden piece
that I put to force them down They wow Okay Well I’ve got no chance with mine Even the ones that started out new last year
they just came out straight out of the the orchid It’s easy in the summer but wow in the winter
I have a hard time Joe says “My psychopsis is doing the same thing with roots growing up and
attaching to the leaf.” Oh no that’s annoying Huh Yeah that’s no bueno for the psychopsis
They need their roots with a lot of water One crack and they found it Julie says “I use
packing peanuts to help train the roots into the pot Packing peanuts and string gently adding
more pressure to the peanuts the longer the roots grow.” Okay I’m trying to get a visual on that I use packing peanuts to help
train the roots into the pot packing peanuts and string Huh I’ll probably figure that one out a
couple of hours later cuz now that’s going to percolate Even on really tough roots you see once
the root tip of an engra comes out it’s already it it it may just be the root tip There’s nothing
to maneuver So I’m going to have to just two roots It has a ton of new roots Okay that’s fine You’re
fine then That’s fine You’ve got 95% yield in the pot That’s good I always say if I can get 80% into
the pot whatever root tips burn on the surface etc it’s collateral damage I can’t do anything
about that in my climate But if I get 80% into the pot I’m good The orchid’s good It’s a
shame that my Maxima um all the new roots burnt Maybe they didn’t burn Let’s put it this
way The conditions were not conducive to them being able to grow and develop completely because
there was too much humidity There was no way they could burn I wasn’t fertilizing the orchid
It was just there was no light and she was living outside That’s how dark our winters or
October was While those roots were burn were growing my sarcops says “I was hoping to have
a spike It seemed pointy but no it’s just end and third.” Oh well Oh well another growth
Ah [Laughter] yawn Soon Julian Soon Joe says “I’m going to get some tea with local honey I
heard it helps with allergies.” Yes definitely local Definitely get local Yeah I am so happy I’m not struggling with allergies When I was in the States I saw
a lot of my colleagues suffer and struggle I was like “Dang don’t want any of that.” Cuz
sometimes you know if you if you eat something wrong and it just slices a bit of your gum
that pain for example goes to your nose and it affects it You’re always snively or it can
move to the eyes where you’re always weepy Oh my goodness If something like that until it heals
up and then something like that is what I imagine allergies to be like constantly something’s
running around and it’s just doesn’t stop love honey Okay so what I’m thinking is to
get Squawker out If I can get him into the jungle gym great And another thing is I do
not have any idea how long my battery on my mic lasts There we go antihistamine refill Oh I remember that I don’t know what it was
Probably one during my very very healthy years Um I used pollen as a supplement in my cereal and I
started to have a reaction because of the pollen pretty much I was putting something into my
body that caused me to have not it wasn’t a bad reaction It was just I wasn’t feeling well
and I don’t know what the symptoms were but uh somebody said you should stop with
the pollen because you don’t have any allergies and it’s bringing up a reaction
and that’s why you’re feeling the way you are I can’t remember exactly the symptoms
but yeah I was putting pollen as a as a supplemental whatever into cereal and they
said that’s stupid So okay Julie’s here Yes Tie the string around the pot Try tie the
string around the pot Use the peanuts on the roots and the string over the peanut Add
more tightness or pressure to the string to force the new growth downward It usually works
Top tip here guys I get it now I Okay now I see The peanut protects the valument
of the root and that’s where you can tighten it and it won’t hurt the
structure of the root It usually works and grow roots are trainable but
you have to catch them early Dang Yeah As I sit in silence staring at my bossery Uh I suppose I can give that a
go when it should it starts a new route We’ll see We’ll see I find that
the longer the root tip is before actual valment shows you shouldn’t be putting
anything on that root tip So by that time the thing is already 5 cm out But hey
it wouldn’t hurt to give it a try I’m not shipping orchids anywhere and I’ve got plenty
of packing peanuts so why not make good use of them don’t think I haven’t thought of you Julie
Okay Sending you hugs and sending happy snuggles Yeah it’s too late for mine as well at the at
this point At least for the ones I’ve got now And uh wherever the root tips should come out
in future they’re way beyond where they could be Oh well Let me just say for as long
as I’ve had this orchid has been a pleasure growing her If she outgrows my capacity I
have no idea what I’m going to do No idea Julian says “Yours starts roots in the winter
which is unpro unpractable because of space availability.” 100% You see mine start the
roots around end of July All of a sudden they kick into action and they would continue
growing throughout the winter but then they stop growing by November I’ve got no more
root tips When I bring mine in they’re all nice green and everything is active Go go
go And yours starts in the winter That is surprising That is very surprising
Talk about space availability 100% I agree And we talk about the ces pidal Hey h but then again I guess variety bossery being a
smaller compactor version Crestwood is a hybrid So maybe the veti and the crestwood has something to do with as to when the roots
actually start on that beast H interesting mercy It was so dark when uh
in February when mine were in bloom They were super late but at least they bloomed
I got some updated footage which was nice It was so dark that I had angraum cesquip
pidal and crestwood fragrance during the day I mean okay fine At least I
didn’t have to stay up and wait for to enjoy it But that just tells you
everything you need to know right there So I hope that the ad experience is
much better this time around because I’ve switched that setting off and whatever
AI is doing is has nothing to do with me as the channel owner that has to tick boxes
and save settings etc They were all off And I hope that was an improvement while I weeded
my maxillaria tenue of clover Hang on a second I just saw Julie made a left a comment and but I’m
already in it Okay Didn’t Annabelle have one in semihydro maybe we should check her old videos
She had several in semihydro but they were young They were young And that’s why I have roots in
the pot on the crestwood because when I got mine it came in like a five 5 cm pot or something
like that And all the roots were curled in the pot and they went straight into the orchid
top it is in now It looked ridiculous cuz the orchid wasn’t even Oh it was small Let’s just
put it that way But all the roots were curled up in the pot which was great Um but then
when as they mature they come out of the stem So my keis are growing The keis on the sesu
pidalia are great because they’re growing roots into the orchid top which is awesome I like
that because that’ll support the mother plant long term So that’s great because they’re close
enough and they’re following the stem downwards It seems that the longer the bigger the orchid
gets the more she thinks she has to attach to something and that’s why the roots get sent out
at that angle so that she finds the trunk or whatever branch to attach her herself to as the
next set of leaves grow You know I think that’s what’s going on as they mature And then the longer
they are the taller they are away from the pot there’s no chance to bring them down Uh speaking
of don’t tilt It’s getting windy Sorry Didn’t mean to spook you guys but it’s getting windy And
she’s right here I’m glad I saw that She was tilting My maxillary tenure yellow is blooming
That is awesome Woohoo I saw Bob Sun’s blooming as well Probably not the same orchid but he
has a yellow maxillaria that is in bloom And that’s awesome Smells like coconut as well Debbie
Question mark cuz I only have my variabulous which uh was not fragrant in my climate I guess you
get some you lose some Many Annabelle had or has maybe still has yellow maxillary variabolis
that smell like caramel I locked out with mine No fragrance But I think I’m seeing spikes coming in
my tenure folia which is great as I weed out the cloves Might as well do something instead of just
looking at it Okay I’m just going to put my um cesidali out of the way so she doesn’t
fall over I know that I’m going to probably forget her Something’s
going to distract me And that’s dangerous How much sun are you going
to go are you going to be okay oh this fussing All this fussing Oh come
here I’ll put you over here for now I can’t wait to get these into the summer
into the south I swear I still have to bring my pandurata out but we’ve only had we’ve still
had temperatures below 15° C and they don’t like that I almost lost my panderata this
winter I thought I had lost a growth again to the rot and peeled away the bracks Oh so
scared Puny little growth long leaf but the bulb is pathetic But that thing decided
to push out another bulb just as we were bringing the orchid inside But thankfully
the bulb greened up It was yellow And yes of course yellow No light on it or anything
and sheath thick thick sheets around it So doesn’t surprise me that the bulb was yellow
But I couldn’t distinguish between yellow being because of lack of light or yellow being
because of rot Of course I saw rot everywhere Paranoid Hang on a second Pina
colada Nice Nice I love that Okay So and if we try a moss pole
I’m always afraid with rot on those Yes You know I’m actually thinking and this
is going to sound cuckoo but for me it’s it’s worked for other orchids I’m going to be
wrapping hob filter material around the roots I can’t I can’t see it otherwise working
or working in any any way shape or form Now during the summer it’s not an issue but come
winter just like with my asca centrum I wrap the hog filter around the roots and you know
same same thing they I put a rock on some but it’ll it will it’ll be less precarious
there because I’ve got two keis growing and there will be roots in the pot supporting
the mother plant But I think I’m just going to wrap something around the roots and then
water that and keep it hydrated that way moss poles there’s no guarantee that the the
root is actually going to crawl up And a moss pole is actually fine if you keep it away from the
stem which you can do You know you don’t have to have the it right up against the stem Just have a
little separator space or something between where the moss is and the stem is And then you know
like they do with trellising on on the side of a house they have like a separation little thing
to keep you know some air going between the facade and the house and then you grow your plant on
the trellis like something like that if that makes sense Julian’s tenolia died cuz it didn’t
like its dry rest but it never was healthy anyway Yeah Um tenure folia doesn’t need a dry rest As
a matter of fact they hate it They won’t water all the time All the time Mine is never without
water Not even during the winter So there is no dry rest with the maxillaria Um I have one
from Insu orchids and ADD It came with the scale issues and I think I’m losing it to those
scale issues It’s still here It’s still with me It hasn’t gone yet but it’s defoliating and it’s
not happy New growths don’t want to develop at etc We’ll see what it does this season It took
me like three years for my tenure f my other tenure folia to actually really get started
and to grow because I thought this orchid is not going to do anything for me and all of
a sudden it’s yeah it’s huge beautiful and finally it’s bloomed took a long time though
so I wouldn’t give if you’re going to try it a tennerolia one also a healthy one that’s
a great way to start off with don’t Give it a rest Keep that thing as damp as possible
and as wet as possible no matter what time of year And it finally made roots That’s great One
bloom That’s the only I only got one bloom the first time my tenure folia um bloomed Just one And
it was a big orchid by the time its first bloom came And then it took off And then I had a little
sparse blooming last year I had the best blooming ever the second year after it finally bloomed its
first bloom that you could actually smell it while you were sitting at the table You didn’t have to
get close to smell the fragrance That was amazing So many blooms But last year it was pathetic
I don’t even think I have enough footage about last year cuz it made it didn’t really make
sense Ooh look Here’s a bloom And then we go and dig around Here’s another bloom Nah So I’m
hoping for better things this year It’s grown a ton I mean what was once a rectangular shaped
pot is now bulging at the edges Looks like my waist So Joe expect more blooms this year Last time I watered it in winter
a whole branch rotted from the bulbs Yeah that’s no good That’s weird And that
sucks And I’m sorry Dang Sounds like a twinkle behavior there to me You have to water it
That’s the problem And you have to water them They can’t be without But then that
needs to counteract with a lot of airflow which is so hard in winter I’m so lucky that
I can actually leave mine outside It doesn’t like it I mean all the beautiful green leaves
everything is a little bit yellow at the tips you know stress blah blah blah So it looks ratty
like cousin It looks a bit ratty but it’s that or the highway And I’m just grateful that it’s
alive It’s like my Stanhopia I’m lucky that it can actually do what it’s doing on the patio
despite having to deal with what it has to deal with Yeah I My little Delinatia is actually in
bloom Unbelievable Woohoo I must take pictures I must I don’t have a long stem this time
around That’s fine And she’s not facing up and nicely looking at me She’s a little bit
droopy That’s fine But we got her to bloom I lost my bloom last year because I thought
I would bring her forward a little bit from her usual space and she promptly blessed
me with bud blast So this year I just left her down there and she had to deal with the
extreme low light conditions and I thought if you’re going to bloom this year great
If you’re not at least I know it wasn’t me No I know Julie I agree That’s why I was saying
I’m just lucky that I can get away with what I’m getting away with with the the orchids that are
or have to be outside And what I found out this year well not just my renant which might just
bloom for us because it got so freaked out by the cold temperatures It’s like what are you doing
i’m going to bloom so that I can pollinate cuz I’m going to die on you now But um I left my prostas
outside Not the garana alba but the lancolia the coccata lancifia I left those outside cuz I
couldn’t bring them back and forth my east rack The rack never moved to the west side It
never moved after what happened in October And I was physically so bad as a result of that Yes
I know I blame myself I’ve got only myself to blame after being doing what I did in October
It’s thrown me back I feel I have a body of an 85year-old now And actually an 85 would probably
walk to the supermarket for me and do my shopping because she’s fitter than I am trust But uh after
that there were well the and and orchids had to stay outside It was just what what it was I have
no trust in what I’m carrying at any given point in time whether my legs are going to give out So
that’s that’s and and hey they had to considering prostas they stayed on on the east side Okay
behind the curtain constantly Constantly I never opened that curtain just to
check to check on them add some water into their reservoir etc We’ll see
what they do moving forward My radiata stayed outside here under the portico
It’s growing two new growths I’m like wow And I I’ll do a little video on this because
not everybody watches these lengthy chatty live streams but I’m going to do a video on this And
I’ll tell you here what happened on the patio and the orchids that normally should be inside but
had to cope with the outdoors And the orchids that go inside cuz it’s warmer that didn’t have light
The ones with the light despite the challenging outdoors fared better if I can say so You you may
not when you see the footage but you may say wrong Trust me they fared better than the orchids
that were inside with no light and at least somewhat normal um night temperatures
And because they didn’t have light they didn’t have energy to counteract the stressful
situation of low temperatures which they have been able to maintain the years before and
they rotted and died That is my conclusion Light is more important than temperature when
it comes to trying to get orchids to go through anything anything that’s troublesome because
if without light they can’t photosynthesize Without photosynthesizing boom no energy and
then anything and everything that comes their way is going to affect them negatively That is
my conclusion I’m sticking to it until I put the video out and somebody tells me otherwise
that convinces me with proof and data of sorts because to have a radiata outside astounding I
started with the perparatas last winter well two winters ago now I was freaking out They fared
well They fared well even though they are in lea and selfwatering and this year needs must
pushed it an experiment into something where I was just crossing my fingers and holding my
breath I lost more orchids indoors than I did outdoors And that includes orchids that
should have been indoors So there’s that And if I keep waving my hands around
like this I’m going to be landing an aircraft Sitting here in a chair speaking into the ether justiculating like I’m about
to land an aircraft and put it into [Music] parking Well there you go That word
quickly is foreign to me Nothing happens quickly with me anymore Except my brain that hasn’t
adapted to my life at the moment Everything is planned Where am I going to walk how am I going to
get there what have I got in my hand do I need to do two things as to where I am going to go in my
destination if so is everything I need there or do I have to go back to where I started in order to
complete the task I want to do at my destination meaning do I dare take two items into my hands
while I walk you get it and of course once you sit down at the computer have you got everything
you need for the next two and a half hours cuz that is the maximum I can stand I can sit Um
and if not yeah you start swearing at yourself because you know now you have to get up you have
to do it all again and oh it’s a whole thing So quickly I would actually say to my daughter could
you just quickly get that for me that’s the only time that word will ever apply to me the things
are not getting better Something happened with my left knee as well recently So it’s swollen up like
a little it’s got the size of a cantal loop So that’s taken my right side out and my left side is
not helping at the moment which is I say keep your feet up I’m like yeah I’m going to have to find
a new way of uh working and editing with my feet raised Oh goodness me Right Okay It’s 3:00 my time Siliano is uh telling me he wants to come out I am going to go and I wonder if
I should I what I’m going to do is mute get him out and I’ll be indoors and
keep this running and see if I can unmute if my mic still works because this is the
longest I have ever been on the mobile mic and you never know all of a sudden
I might get the red light and blink Blink blink So we’re going to take
this I’ve got that I don’t need that I’m thinking aloud Welcome to my world
And I’m going to go on mute for a little bit Am I [Music] back if anybody is still in here I
get it I get it Nobody has got time for this all day Just a question if you can hear me while
I’m here while I still have battery and my microphone because I’m indoors now I’m away from
the transmitter and if anybody is still around and if not that’s fine I just need to know because I
can at least then put everything on mute and just leave the stream running Oh hey Debbie That’s so
sweet of you that you’re still here Oh speaking of um forgetting things my tea is about to
become sun tea so I just have to go and get that All righty Yes Yes I’m coming
He’s screaming at me Actually he’s not a screamer That’s the wrong word He calls
me He calls me especially when he wants a cookie which only after you’ve flown
a little bit Yeah there he is Unless you So he sits on top of his cage for a little
bit assessing the situation before he goes back Fluffy Teddy hey it’s good to see you Thank
you so much for being here I appreciate that Hope you’re having a fabulous day Any noises you
hear now it’s the bird myself when I interact snap my fingers Come on fly And then you
know the dogs up against my right hip No bueno Come on fly Okay I don’t I only ask him
so long so much time and then I don’t bother Usually when I do when I hold up my arm and I pat
my shoulder and ask him to fly he’ll come to me But he’s seeing my hat He’s seeing the microphone
These are items he’s not accustomed to so he’s wary Even if I change my clothes back in the
day I used to wear different colors He can’t stand it in the mornings lifting up his his
cover from the cage he backs away if there’s any difference Putting earrings in makeup on
um wrapping your towel around your head after a shower any difference at all and the bird is
having a conion looks at you like he’s never seen you before until he doesn’t get accustomed
to hearing that it’s you because of your voice etc It’s a whole thing So hat microphone
Yeah he’s looking at me He’s like “Yeah who are you?” He can hear my voice He
knows it’s me but it’s weird It’s just weird So he won’t come straight away But if
you hear like little helicopter rotors that’s him His wings depending on where he’s flying
to Either he’ll come here or not We’ll see But this is now what I have to do for him
Depending on when he’s ready to go back in his cage which if I don’t take him back because I
have stuff to do it can be 2 and 1 half sometimes 3 hours And sometimes I can push this out to 400
p.m when he’s not squawking but that’s because I’m in the house and he can see me or I’m in and
out of the house on the patio so he’s not bothered But he hasn’t seen me now He has only heard me
for the last two hours having sat outside And that’s why pushing it forward 1 hour will be
done by 5:30 with this with him And that then he’s happy He’ll just go back to his cage and go
inside all by himself But he he sounds very needy but he’s not He just has certain characteristics
that make him sound like you know he’s needy but he’s not He’s he’s very self-sufficient And what
he’ll actually do is eventually he’ll probably just fly up into the rafters of the curtains
and the curtain rod and then just start to go to sleep But which is a complete waste of time for me
until he then ventures down and then we hang out We eat popcorn together or a cookie together
and and then we cuddle and he just settles on my chest and cuddle cuddle cuddle and by
that time I my heart rate has reduced to such a degree I’m ready for a nap whereas he
goes back in his cage and I have to continue until it’s bedtime Worked with an Amazon
parrot who loved me until I cut my hair Oh h yeah he does that with my daughter as well
when she comes down after a shower Maybe she’s wrapped in a towel and she’s got her hair
all up and I don’t know what and she’s not dressed or what she normally wears around
the house or when she goes to work He has a fit She goes up to his cage wants to say
hi or wants even if he’s outside wants to say hi and he’s just scuttling all around
the cage getting as far away from her as possible Julian says “I have cockatiles
who still haven’t understood they can’t fly through the ceiling and that cats are
not toys.” Oh okay It seems the smaller they get the like with dogs the more
they they don’t know their size Oh my goodness Well this one he’s got a little jungle
gym inside My curtains are shredded There’s a curtain rod hanging down as a perch for him
There’s toys all strewn up in the ceiling Yeah he can he can walk between curtain rods or across
a bendy wooden suspended bridge It’s all going on in the ceiling here He’s got a perch that leads
to his jungle gym which I hope I can get him out at some point I would love to spray him down
but it would be too late now because he didn’t go to the jungle gym straight away He needs to
dry before going back Oh it’s a thing It’s a thing Hey Linda So sweet of you to make it We’re
just hanging out Well the camera’s outside I’m now inside Joe says “I had to clean the sink
faucet first Used hydrogen peroxide and the toothbrush from the dentist.” Did
it work with the hydrogen peroxide white vinegar for me white vinegar every
every once in a while Just a little squirt of white vinegar takes care of
that But of course if there’s a bit of a if there’s still some the the
hardness of our water is insane So I like white vinegar I mean it makes the
spa place smell horrible but it’s good It works Hope you’re having a good day Linda Thank you so much for stopping by It’s nice to
see you I have no idea how long this stream is going to last I mean it’s a good test
to see how long my mobile mic battery lasts There were black Oh I got you
Black spots on your hand Okay So what we can what can we talk about
how’s the weather where you are let’s do a little bit of the British thing
British always like to talk about the weather I mean you’ve heard enough about my
weather up until now How is the weather where you’re at have you got spring is everything
already past that place is it Have things bloomed out and you’re working on annuals now do
you garden at all i used to be an avid gardener I used to have like an estate property with a lot
of things I dug out my own pond Um built my own little pond section I only dug out such a large
pond because I didn’t want to mow that big of a lawn anymore So that was that was work I had I
used to have an iris collection that I grew in rows for cutting And every once in a while I
would add new ryzones into my collection Used to And I love the smell of iris And I had
sweet peas I grew clatus A lot of clatus I could almost call those a collection as well
I loved my rodendrons I used to have a pine forest along the right side and moving into
the back of the yard So it was like half and half And there I had all the um crocus bulbs
I I put in the lily of the valley bulbs made it a very woodsy area and you know dug bulbs
into that space etc I also used to grow what um let me just make sure I remember in German
I know the name in German Hang on a second It starts with H and they’re quite
pricey and they bloom they bloom in in some areas around March but they’re
full bloom is April I forget the name and I can’t Google but they’re a perennial The
hyestins are blooming Nice Love those Love those It’s in the 70s so I can more Okay good
all day and night That’s awesome That’s great My temperatures are a little bit too low still
for my panderata Once that one comes outside it feels like I can shift the whole thing because my
catacetune are starting new growth but the night temperatures were not there yet I still have them
indoors but I’ve already moved everything forward onto the shelves that are empty Mother’s Day Sunny
only on Sunday and Mother’s Day That’s nice That’s nice to have sun then on Monday Uh on Sunday the
rest of the week will be cloudy which is the usual in Connecticut And do you get a lot of humidity
in Connecticut as well then Joe if you’ve told me in the past please remind me Julian son says “The
blatas and epic cactus are in flower.” All right I had a very bad ablatia blooming this year
Not the abundance of last year but I’ve got two seed pods I guess the pollinators were out like
gagging for food Don’t blame them I love hers Love them And Joe says “This is
why I struggle with caters here I only have six large ones under LED lights because of the cloudiness I’m assuming reverting
back to that comment Yeah but you’ve got day length working for you So even in nature they
get cloud or if you were let’s say in my case uh the patio gets very small because it’s
sunny everywhere for example to find bright shade you have to create it Okay and I I would
really struggle I mean I’ve had only two very hot days in last year And on the first day
that was very hot I had the big burn Okay So even on cloudy days it shouldn’t be a
problem because you’ve got the day length to compensate Oh we’ll see You’re doing it to my
understanding you’re doing it for the first time this year to have your caters outside I mean and
then you you’re blessed with the LED lights during the the winter So we’ll see how that works I
am sure it’s going to be fine Let’s just say you have less worries on cloudy days Joe than
you do on sunny days Trust Trust When there’s a cloudy day here during the summer I rejoice
because a it’s warm the humidity is higher and I can fertilize much much heavier and know that
everything is going to be okay Nothing’s going to like no fertilizer burn will occur Linda says
“Our yard is full of flower beds and vegetable gardens that I created over the years.” Oh I’m
so envious I’ve had a bad back surgery Five back Oh Oh I am so sorry I’m telling you as a once
avid gardener it’s the hardest thing for me was to then move somewhere I mean it was nice to be
in a property where I only had containers to deal with It felt like a you know workload was lifted
off my shoulders but I missed my veggies I missed growing my this And I tried with all my herbs and
stuff and containers which was fine That worked But what about my you know my strawberry patch
i I had uh I had the um not cranberries but the other ones the very tart ones Gooseberries Do you
call them gooseberries those are green I think But anyway I had I had so many different things in in
my garden that it wasn’t just a designated like vegetable garden with raised beds I had things
dotted in my flower beds that were edibles like my lettuce my tomatoes and all those things were
all dotted around in my flower bed So it was like a walking snack If things were coming into fruit
or whatever you could have a you know grab a grab something while you move on to something else
or while you were working in a flower bed you can have a little sunwarm tomato as you work
you know stuff like that I love that stuff So you know it was hard for me to give
up gardening And I now of course feeling physically the way I do I’m kind of like oh man I
would die if my garden were were unckempt because I couldn’t take care of it anymore It was It’s
a different sort of pain You know you watch your garden fall apart I’m so sorry Linda So so
sorry Gosh I used to have cucumber zucchini what else i mean okay the usual the peppers of
this And I remember in Germany back in the day there weren’t that many chilies And I was a chili
fan coming from Kenya So I grew all my all all my hot stuff that I needed for my sauces my salsas
my you know for pickling and stuff like that It was great Right now it’s 74% humidity on
the port Nice The lowest was 21% though You could have them in the southern exposure in
the porch but my mom won’t move the couch there H it could be a blessing Southern exposure You may
you may actually be you you may be okay because maybe you’re out and about on a what supposed to
be a cloudy day and suddenly you’re not home and the cloud cover breaks and there are your orchids
exposed I did that once with my daughter many years ago when the patio wasn’t as established yet
for orchid growing as it is now But let’s just say the east rack the curtain was open because it
was scheduled to be a completely cloudy day And we went to the garden center we had a snack we had
some lunch and little you know chat la And let’s say a quick trip to the garden center lasted 4
hours including lunch And as we were driving home I was looking oh it’s such a beautiful day And I
went and then it occurred to me it how long has it been a beautiful day when did the clouds go back
alex Alex do you remember when it stopped because we were inside in the garden center you know and
we only came out with a snack a little bit later Do you know when it got sunny la because the
curtain on the east side was up The first thing I did back in the day when I could rush doing
stuff out of the car rush to the east side and I touched every single leaf Of course the sun was
still burning down And it was still before 3:00 p.m on to them and on touching every leaf panic
stations Oh my goodness It was I got away with it just Julian says here the blatias tried
flowering in November Of course the spike and yes that’s what I was looking at as
well my whenever they come out I’m like really the new shoots come out and then
you know we have all that weather yet and cold temperatures to deal with but we don’t
get freezing so my shoots just stop growing and they wait for better days and warmer
temperatures oh that’s a shame so it’s got them reset huh now they’re flower even better
that’s great I’m glad to say hear that Debbie says “Blatia purposes I got six quorums a while
ago Nothing showing yet Got them about two months ago.” Okay they should be
coming through any minute now That’s a long time But then again what are
your night temperatures have you got your pot or where you’re growing them or the patch maybe
you’ve got them in the landscape Is that in sun joe says “I was thinking of some kind
of greenhouse for the patio outside but it would take up too much space and the shelves are
usually not big enough for my largest caters.” Yes that’s a problem And then you also have
the issue with the shelves and the height etc What if you what if you were to do just shelves
but could you not put up like a temporary like sale canvas kind of a sale thing you know like
a triangular thing or a square thing that you can have with you know po posts in the ground
or or something temporarily like that I don’t know your structure so laugh away But I know
a lot of people here for their outdoors they um like yeah I have my umbrella but many people
they they take like a huge canvas which is made for sun blocking four terraces and patios and
gardens not not a cabana kind of thing Similar material but it’s temporary and it’s gone by the
winter You can take it down Deandre Hey how are you Orchid Ninja you’re doing good You having a
good day i’m building a garden from scratch on bedding On bedding three and veggie
patch should be up and running in spring Struggling with my roses at the
moment Something is hitting them hard Lost two already and one is so
so Huh is it some kind of blight does it have some rusty patches on the stems and stuff what is the pH of your soil where they’re at were they established in your garden
or recently planted all these questions Joe says “I have one in a hanging
basket now and another I could try but those were inexpensive bag babies
that I’m willing to take the risk.” Okay You’re welcome Fluffy I don’t know
what the wow was but whoever said it maybe I said something You’re welcome Winter
strongly on its way here Yes Yeah 10 to 20 Yeah,um I get to be jealous I get to be jealous
when you’re in summer so I’ll just leave it there Poor Pereia I’m hoping they grow in a
pot Only been outside for a week Oh okay No you’ve got time They should grow well in a pot
Nicely well draining Keep them damp and uh nice in a sunny spot Put the pot in a sunny spot So
that’s why they haven’t popped up yet It’ll be exciting They grow just like an iris would Joe
says “I’ve got a new TDS meter to try out for this year Haven’t used it yet.” That’s fine You’re
comfortable with what you’re doing You’ve always got time to do that And Joe says “We usually have
a picnic table out there with an umbrella.” Yes That’s good too Sometimes the angle of the sun
can be a as it moves It doesn’t always come from above Your blatiest also tried to bloom in winter Huh Genu Oh renunculus bulbs and anamony
bulbs They started popping up Oh I like those But they had to be somewhere in
the flower bed where afterwards maybe um Wow Oh I’m going to have to start googling
the names I can’t remember my plant names My perennials I used to put the renunculus cuz they
were quite early in the season in my flower beds where then the foliage could just die back
and not be ugly But they the when another shrub would come up which has the long spires
of blue blooms and I forget the name It’s one of my favorite I can’t believe I forget the
name For me it was blue purpley blooms and sometimes they went went into purple lavender
but really long and they’re perennial and they would then take over as would my holly hawks I
can go to the local home improvements or to see what they have I would never I would need to set
up something by the end of May or it’s not going to happen Gotcha If I do give up on my caters
I can trade at the orchid society I missed the last meeting last week since it was my mom’s
birthday Oh happy birthday post birthday mom Happy birthday I got a Oh wow I got a perfume
for Mother’s Day called Golden Cat Leon That’s cool Does she like it i hope she likes it By the
way whoever decided to name two orchids Blatia and Blatia Yep Agree Platia estriata is winter
resting But for Mosana and Suanika are more constant growers So hybrids with those
such as my Blatia Penway Paris are just not knowing when to rest That’s a problem
Then treat them as if they don’t rest or look and see who’s the pollen parent Who is
the seed parent will have the stronger trait of the whatever the pollen parent was If you can
figure that out then go with whoever was the seed parent When you say winter resting Julian son
does that mean you also consider that deciduous i’m just interested because
my blatas will lose their leaves And if they didn’t lose their
leaves are they still a winter resttor like my noble leaves they don’t lose
all their leaves Sporadic here and there but people consider them winter resting You have no idea what is hitting the
roses The canes are just dying on the roses The others around it are fine
They’ve been there for about a season And you’re not dealing with any kind of
gophers moles anything chewing on your roots I don’t know I don’t know There’s so many
things There’s blight There’s this rust fungus that leaves like it looks like the canes are
going red and just uh looking like anthsyanin but they’re actually dying back because of
the rust fungus Are they getting enough iron sometimes if you hit them with chelated iron
it would be better No the hydrangeanger No Um I want to say delphinium but it’s not I want
to say delphinium And that’s not because Deand is here and I’m thinking of dolphins but I’m I
I’m not sure if it’s a delphinium if that’s the name I don’t want to fire up another computer
cuz I don’t want to pull data away from our stream Yeah there the sides
Gotcha I see That’s all right Good The perfume is supposed to smell like
narcissus daffodil orange fruit orange cream soda New Calonia sandalwood
M yum Amber tinched resins Le musks Yum It’s for the mother’s day Got it And that’s
the sun tomorrow Tomorrow So we’ll know if she likes it tomorrow I like that I like nissus
Daffodil for me don’t have a fragrance but maybe that’s not here nor there Doesn’t mean anything
I like orange fruit so it’s very fresh Orange blossom honey Honey Yum yum yum We like that
Interesting to have the cream soda M I like that I don’t like sweet perfumes I like I like them fresh
So all those notes of freshness are there but I like the body of the sandalwood that comes with
it That makes sense to me That inspires my nose Nice BT for Mosana and Setuanica keep their
leaves and start new growth as soon as the previous ones mature That’s nice My leaves are
holding on for dear life now They’re still looking lovely jolly and not for long Deandre says “You
just planted higher synths today They’re peach purple blue Can’t wait to see what they’ll
look like.” Also did liliums No Nice Nice So delphiniums makes no sense No nobody’s nobody
can cur and say “Yeah I know which one that is You see if I was at my computer now which
I can’t because Seliano would then follow me and that is a nogo zone for him I would
Google search it with you and then show you I used to have a lot of deliniums which I think
is what they are Daffodils are the caters of the northeast They don’t last long Joe says they
don’t last long though We had tulips here and now the liies are growing like crazy I used
to really like tulips I got bored though with planting them just for a spectacle and then they
would fle out They never really naturalized for me I did have a patch of wild ones though
They did pretty well back in the day But I like my little bulbs that came back year
after year after year and then naturalized And that’s why I started the Iris
collection because they they would just grow grow grow grow grow and if I needed
to thin some out I always had a home for all the ryomes It was nice And the commercially
available hybrid stock both anyway both You never know which one they used as pod or
pollen parent Okay But you have the name Julian So if you Google the name and Google
the parents the first one will be your pod parent the first name Unless it’s one of
those complex hybrids then we don’t know Unless you have a name and then you can
check what ancestry they have Oh here he comes Hey Robert Forest It’s good to see you
Howdy [Music] dudy It is what oh 6:35 I was I just saw the 3 I’m like are you nuts well
it’s nice I I’ll do I speak quietly or just turn my volume down We’re going for as long as
the mic can hold out I’m sitting indoors now and what you’re hearing squawking is my bird
cuz it’s his time Yep Step up There you go All right he’s on my knee now
We’re going to head scratches going He’s ready to have a nice spray
down Yes but the name just tells you how it was registered if and the rever
reverse cross has the same name Oh okay Yeah Okay Okay that’s weird I love wild species Yeah the tulips
Mine have lasted for decades now They are slowly more move around the flower but yes
Yes they do They do I remember them I love them I used to I don’t remember all their names
There we go Delphinium So I was right Yay At least I remember one the I’m still thinking
about the one with the H with the blooms The blooms always show down and usually that
that perennial likes a lot of shade It’s in the wooded It used to be in my like wooded
area and um the leaves can stay throughout the winter They’ll be fine but they look a little bit
raggedy come you know early spring late winter But the new growth is all buds and usually
the blooms face down At least back in the day I guess now they’re hybridizing them so
that they at least you can look at them from above I’ll get there if I remember If I remember
delinium maybe the H1 will come back to me Yeah I had orange wild tulips little star- shaped ones
that remind me of the harpilla My harpilla looks has that orange And then I had some pink ones
little pink ones where the foliage just looks like grass It’s not the typical tulip foliage
Not king It’s not the typical tulip foliage It was just like grass spiddly foliage But the
blooms were they would close at night and have all the pink all around them They would
close at night and they open during the day and they’re all white inside And then they close
at night again Very pretty Love them Very dainty Building from scratch is expensive Yes there they’re there are like
loopins but um but but they don’t they don’t grow tall No no no They’re not like loopins The
delphiniums Yes Have a similar growth structure as the lupins Yes Yes But uh no the ones that
I’m calling the ones with Hook not hooker No this is bugging me They’re pretty expensive as
well Hate their roots disturbed I know the details but I can’t think of the name And they come in
all colors All colors I planted that one too The hydrangeanger No it’s not a hydrangeanger I uh
No hydrangeas are like shrubs This is a ground like a little ground cover thing with beautiful
blooms The first thing that will come up is the bloom in the spring Late winter early spring
is the first thing that will come up Trust me I’ll put it I’ll put it in a community post if
I don’t think of it during the stream Big flag Iris Yes me too Anything Iris I used to just
love that I I I appreciated the fact that they wouldn’t tip over They didn’t need staking Um
for a while there I was growing some gladiolas but I don’t I didn’t like the mess and all the
staking I just nah So I ditch gladiolas and it all it all went into iris The strata crossed
with formosana is penway sunset for example but make forana cross with strriata The gre is
still penway sunset It’s true for all orchids Uh okay I’ll take you I’ll take your word for it
Something in my gray cells is saying h reverse seed parent and pod parent and it should be or
could be something could be a different name Okay Can’t I I’ll just I’ll I’ll let that stand
because I can’t tell you any with conviction any otherwise A snowball A snowball looks
green all year And then the snowball is these Oh they’re gorgeous But nope that’s a shrub as
well I’m I’m talking like like low low ground cover I’m going to fire up another device If the data starts to stall forgive me
but this is bugging me Bugging me Let me just get this And then when I see the name I’m going to go are you
serious how can you forget that low growing So maybe we
should type that properly Low grow Can’t type with one
hand Growing spring No Late Winter Flowering Garden plant You see I have to type all this out because I never type
these things Starting with a H Hello [Laughter] Bors Hello Bors I can’t believe it
Probably the next time we talk about this I’m going to forget it again
That’s the kind of name that this one is I love hellaors The only
thing is that the blooms face down And in Germany they were quite expensive if you wanted an established one that
was already blooming The psychopsis has been watered Both making a new leaf each
with second on both coming soon That is awesome I guess my iris emoji won’t
show Yes I’m seeing something But is that an iris that is cool Is that a
new emoji i’ve never seen it before If you hadn’t if you hadn’t pointed that out to
me I wouldn’t have I wouldn’t have recognized that Robert that is awesome The formula registered is the one it’s
been made the first time and I agree It changes the behavior but the way the RHS works cross
and reverse cross is the same Gres they make no difference Interesting Interesting So why is
my brain saying that there is a difference is there a difference in behavior then of the
plant as well as color is there something something tells me and I can’t put my finger on
it There is a difference depending on who’s the seed parent and who’s the pollen parent when it
comes to hybridization and if you cross them over Something is there Hellaors Yes I love those
Christmas roses That’s right That’s right So I got to I got to remember try to remember that
Let me just shut that down so it doesn’t Linda says “I knew you were talking about Heler Boris
but couldn’t think of the name either.” So we had them both in our heads I guess I’m good at
describing but it sucks when it comes to names Oh gosh that was a long search phrase
as well I thought “Oh I’m going to be hit with a whole list of things with starting with H.” But I guess I got precise enough
Yes me too Linda I used to be able to go in and victors you know Me too But
now I’m like fumbling over the basics considering I had a lot of haores Even
I had to think of lily of the valley and it sounded like I could think of it
straight away but my mind was already ahead and my mouth was trying to
catch up and I couldn’t think of it It is so true Even my berry patch Okay
I remember my strawberries But now I’m thinking what were those tart little red
berries i know they weren’t cranberries because back in the day in Germany we did
not grow cranberries so they weren’t But I know them in German though Johannes
beer Johannes bear red And then there’s the black ones that were not as tart But
I used to have those So many varieties of plants It’s going to be a pain in the butt
to remember them all That’s right That’s right You use tags on your in your garden as well
Yeah You know I used to always ditch my tags Only my orchids ever had tags But in the garden no
I just never thought it necessary Blackberries were Yeah we I had those as well but I’m now I’m
talking about uh and those are the other ones The other ones I’m talking about they’re very very
tart Um red berries They’re all on a little string Um one little branch has lots of little
red like jewels dangling off of them Hang them up to your ear It looks like you’re
you’ve got a fancy and sparkling earring on Currents No currants are raisins
right i’m going to Google this That was easy with the hellaors I feel emboldened now jumping mics Let’s go No of course not
Okay I love blackberries I couldn’t grow blueberries Never could grow blueberries
Never was successful with those And um I didn’t grow hydranges back in the day if
I remember correctly I didn’t grow those I had rotodendrons everywhere which was not which was
probably not the best idea cuz they all kind of bloomed at once It was a spectacle and then
afterwards you know we’re kind of done with the roto dendrrons but oh my goodness do I love
rotodendrons Oh anything cobbler Robert anything cobbler I don’t care what the ingredient is
Cobbler any day Okay let me just see your Hannes beer in English Let’s make that one easy Yeah current It is the current Yes I thought
a suddenly I said current and I thought now it sounds more like a prune a raisin or something
The currents very tart O you know it makes them It’s like brain freeze on ice cream but you
know just take a whole springrig of it and just run it through your mouth All the berries
pop off and it’s like the mouth explodes You bucker up your eyes and it’s like too tart
And then sometimes you just dip them in a little bit of sugar Dig dip the whole sprig
into sugar and then do the same thing And then just slide that twig out and all the
berries stay in your mouth It’s just yum I love the smell of the currant bushes It
reminds me of clothes with a little sweetness That is right Yeah So I had black currant and
I had red currant Julian son says “With some papacios the reverse cross is not possible at
all or depending on the pod parent it grows poorly because not all the traits are inherited
Half half.” and something along those lines I have discovered thanks to Joe who spoke with a
slipper expert And I asked him about my Gloria Nogle because that’s the only one I’m really
having difficulty with and I’ll probably lose it cuz it’s not gaining any strength cuz they
and and he said it is possible that without knowing exactly the parents were reversed making
this one a problem Meanwhile Gloria is a problem Anyway but something else has happened
because this is not normal after so many years Anyway so I’ve learned something new today
I’m going to have to remember everything that you’ve just said Deandre Sun says “I’ve
just got my first four allocations.” Another rabbit hole to go down Absolutely 100%
And that helps a lot That humidity level of 70% Sorry about that ear If anybody’s got
earbuds in it’s happening He’s on his jungle gym That helps a lot So do you grow any elephant
ears in your garden uh DeAndre or Kid Ninja Deandre I used to have monsteras growing
up in the wild in the garden They were never there To my understanding they
were maybe planted there decades ago and they were all over the place
growing up trunks and trees and in some gardens of my friends They were
actually growing in and amongst and the angrums Slipper orchids are becoming
my favorite just because they so low maintenance I hear you I I hear you loud and
clear If I had a bullhorn I would have just used that loud and clear I hear you Linda
says “My currents are almost flavorless I wonder if yours were closer to what we
call gooseberries Now gooseberries are a little green and they have a little bit of
fuzz around them Right My grandpa used to grow gooseberries Love gooseberries I love
them so much So much so much Fresh off the bush Yum And a compot of gooseberries as well Oh
yum Your currents are almost flavorless I know that currants also come in clear like little
transparency little balls as well I think that those are awesome Almost flavorless That is a
I can’t believe that I I mean I believe it You said it but Mm- The red currants that I had
were like yikes Maybe it’s just the variety Maybe since I was a child and back in uh what
maybe now we’re talking 25 years ago when I was no more than oh never mind a long time ago when
I had my garden Maybe that they’re breeding all that tartness out to make them more palpable
straight away I don’t know I love gooseberries I do Yes Also pig’s ears And I have a monster
growing on the side Nice And a massive bird of paradise Love those I love bird of paradise
plants And dalia are awesome Yes What a pain in the derriè though to have to dig them up
So I didn’t have many I had some but not many In Germany I had to dig those up and store them
And it was a whole thing And it’s just like yeah no And then you have so many cuz they just multiply They’re so rewarding aren’t they you
just put a little tuber in there and this whole thing comes up like where’d you come from
and then you dig them up and it’s like oh it’s like a potato You just chuck one potato
in and you boing come out Oh that’s another thing I used to love growing my potatoes and
I used to love harvesting potatoes so much and carrots and I loved growing my own broccoli my
own beans I could just go out in the garden and uh they were still warm and h so good Make
a fresh green bean salad Everything from the garden from the onions from this and that
Everything except for the condiments But no my parsley was mine My chives were mine Thyme
rosemary everything was mine Mine Mine I you know I was the only thing I wasn’t doing my own
vinegar I I wasn’t very good with the lemons So I didn’t grow citrus I didn’t have that much
space indoors to overwinter lemon trees or anything like that But talk about having so much
fun pulling and digging for potatoes and getting those because you a you can’t wait But the little
ones are so delicious They’re not even you know mature enough yet But you can root around the
plant and see if you can’t pick up maybe five or 10 for a meal and also maybe either make
those into a salad Oh I’m dying here What do I need i I also grew my own garlic I love
that Okay it’s possible that they are a variety Yeah my aunt got me hooked
on them in the early 60s on blackberries I think if I go back we
were talking blackberries and the cobbler right cobbler cobbler Yeah blackberry Cobbler
Yeah Oh gosh stop You’re making me salivate All I’m going to eat is popcorn I love that
stuff I could put my whole face in it I’ve always been a sweet tooth I never had any I
never had any problems with anything sweet And if it wasn’t sweet enough I’d make it
sweeter Beonas and foo I like the fuchsia Robert I find beonas to be a little bit too Yeah I
feel like they’ve been pushed into people’s faces so much I’m It’s almost turned me off but they
are super reliable out in the garden as well Yeah And I was so surprised that I could
find perennial ferns in Germany because I love ferns for my wooded area there And
um to find the ferns that survived and came back it was awesome I didn’t I learned a lot
gardening in Germany when I left Kenya cuz I thought ferns and you know in the winter that
was so much fun I remember how happy I was Deandra son says “I was pretty surprised with
the dalia as well One tuba made a bunch.” That’s right You’re not cutting them up All right You
may get away with it for another year and then you are going to have to thin them or else they
can become fungal They need you know one more year If you just repo if you plant that clump
again one more year eventually you’re going to have to divide them up or else it can pose
some issues during storage Not only during storage but afterwards I mean you’ll still
get your dalia back but the plant is going to suffer There is such a there’s a sickness
for dalas that even if when you get them do not plant a dalia in that space again It won’t
affect the others if you plant something else in that space but I’m not familiar if you
know that and I don’t want to scare you Um but keeping them uh let’s say keeping
them well separated with the bulbs in a maintainable clump and not just year in in
year in and year in just leaving a clump as is Um I’m looking for mosaic No it’s not the mosaic
virus There’s another one I I can email you when I get that We don’t need to discuss Dalia thing
But make sure that you you’ll get away with it for one more year and then you need to you need
to take them apart And my mic is showing red So if I at any point cut out then I’ll just keep the
stream running but I’ll stop talking How about that well I’ll stop talking And I know
that everybody’s been here for quite some time They could stay in the soil over there Here
as long as they’re deeper than 10 cm they survive winter Yes that is true too Depending on how
much precipitation you get they can survive certain conditions or just leave them and
mulch them over I always prefer to dig mine up I didn’t want to have to worry about that
patch How much mulch am I going to need am I going to overwinter insects etc etc I didn’t
want that headache So once again I don’t know I’ve never had my mic on red but if it cuts
out you know where I’m at And I’ll type in chat Potato growing Yes And also sweet
potatoes So easy So delicious Versatile Yum Here people went cacti because of
cacti because of the 8-year drop I hate it Yes Yes And um there’s certain things that you
can do with cacti when it comes to needing water Some have more in them than others that
you can also harvest liquid from if need be Okie dokie I did not know that about
dalia I do know about gold Sunflowers clean soil Yeah I think that’s what it
was called Yes Deandre Sun That’s what it was called I do know about goal
Clean soil So you can plant that instead to clean the soil That’s it The goal
around the Dalia stem Mhm Mhm 100% That’s it 16 hours Uh that’s the other computer telling
me what time it is Sorry I’m here alone Every once in a while this gentleman
pipes up and tells me what time it is Golden potatoes So m yum I like those And I want
a potato that has a flavor I went to the states I have never had such disgusting homemade mash
in my life Homemade Even with roast potatoes I pre-roasted so that it could enhance the flavor
of the potato mash It was disgusting I thought I had just done something with water and water only
I was so horrified I said “Excuse me what is this horrible potatoes bought at Walmart yuck It put me off potato mash And also what I’ve never understood while I was
when I was in the states was putting cinnamon or maple syrup on sweet potatoes I can’t do
that I can’t do that No What are you doing i know you can make a pie out of it That makes
sense But not No Just you know savory I like my sweet potatoes [Music] savory Hash browns
Yum yum yum yum yum yum Well let me tell you something When my mic goes out it’s going to be
popcorn for me and the bird or the bird and I But I wonder before my mic goes out I want to say
thank you It’s been almost 3 hours and there’s always been somebody here We’ve been chatting away
It’s awesome Also nice it wasn’t just you know always the focus on on the orchids which there’s
nothing wrong with that but just getting to know other people’s preferences and likes dislikes
etc And also things that you know I figured out that I may have to figure it Google if I can
do streaming from a device just using 4G and if that’s going to give us a chance and maybe I have
to do that straight through YouTube so as I’m not pulling any kind of memory storage whatever for
a streaming software maybe that’s the way to go And the only reason then that I don’t
want to do that is because it would be vertical as opposed to horizontal unless
they have by now changed the camera settings back All these things I have to figure
out for next time Have a fantastic day as well Robert I appreciate you coming in
Make sure that you stay safe and stay cool
