それは黒沢映画に出るってことは肺にとっ て誇りだったと思いますよ。え、とても 幸運な、え、ことでした。その後も何本か 黒沢さんとあの 仕事させてもらって色々 教えを受けましたがよく山崎は図々しいと あんな図々しいやつは見たことがない みたいなことをよく言ってたんです。 で、ある時僕が いや実は僕は本当に臆病もで小心物でああ なんですよってことを言いました。そし たらクロサーさんが即座に分かってるよっ て言いました。 だから何もかも見抜かれていたということ ですね。てみれば 多分うん。黒沢さんは全くあの映画出演の 経験のない新人を使う意向があったんじゃ ないかと思います。僕は実は言うとその前 に何本か映画出てまして、え、その条件に ははまらなかったんですが、どうも 黒沢さんのイメージに合う、え、新人がい なかったようで僕のところに回ってきまし た。だからコンディションも多分後半だっ たと思いますが、 とにかくすごかった。 大体僕はプロサー映画のファンだったので 、新の侍は 高校生の時9回見てますからそれ多くて 震え上がりました。まん前にさんがいて欲 に僕の記憶だと10数人偉い人がいたよう な気がしますが実はそんなにいなかったか もしれないんですが もうごめんなさいして逃げ出そうと思い ました。 で、ラストシーンをやってみようとロサ さんがサングガラスを外して、 実は言うと僕はその時、え、症で人の目を 、あ、じっと見続けることができなかった んですね。まして相手は黒沢明らですから これは困ったことになったなと思いました 。それでもその時の目が、え、黒沢さんの 目が実に柔らかくて優しくてもう端を描い てもいいじゃないかと。お前の怖がってる 気持ちは全部僕は分かってると。そういう ような本当に柔らかな目でした。で、僕は 、え、その目に、え、吸い込まれるように してかなり長いシーンでしたが、ずっと 見つめながら人の目を見つめながら芝居を することができました。そのことが嬉しく て、もうオーディションよりも人の目を見 続けることができたっていうことが嬉しく て、そしたらいや映画というのは、え、 自動販売機にコインを入れてジュースを 買うようなわけにはいかないんだと。1つ 1つ 目の前にある仕事を集中、ある仕事に集中 すること1つ1つ瞬間瞬間 目の前にある仕事に集中すること そしたらいつの間にか終わってるんだと いうことをおっしゃいます。あのゴミが 流れてなきゃならない。そう、本当にもう あのメタンガスが湧いてくるようなそう いうもう腐った川でなければいけないって いうイメージがあったんですね。監督の中 に。その川のとても綺麗な川だったんです よ、実は。その綺麗な川をあのそこまで 汚すのがね、なかなかうまくいかなくて 旅監督さんたちが随分怒られてたのを覚え てます。1年間殺業があるわけですよ。だ から夏のシーンは夏取ればいいでしょう。 ところが夏のシーンで僕はYシャツ1枚 だった。白いワイシャツ1枚。それを 冬取るんですよ。しかもあのオープン セットで撮影するわけですけども、あの時 はスタジオの中にブースを作ってで、その 誘拐した、え、子供をうん。そばに置いて その子供に叫ばせて お父さんなんて叫ばせてそれをあの 止めたりする。 そういうこともやってました。ブースの中 で兵士のうん、屈折した、え、感情みたい なものを感じるんですね。 これは多分、え、野良犬だったかで、え、 ミレさんが、え、福印兵の格好をして町を 、え、彷徨があるんですが、それともあの リンクしてんのかもしれませんがイメージ 的に。しかし民さん自身も平だったわけで 、なんかそういう印象がありますね。です から、我々が体験していない、え、地獄を 見てきた人 とても優しい人で面倒身のいい人なんです ね。 ですから、あの、この天国と中国の時も よく、あの、僕は電車で通ってましたから 、え、ゆさんのあの 赤いMGのスポーツカーで2人乗りの、え 、駅まで送ってもらいました。 え、ところが 大変なせっかちであの人は僕もどっち かってば あののんびりしてない方なんですが 大変な切っちゃ 僕が冥光としてええ 衣装を脱いで帰り自宅をしてるともう エンジン孵化して待ってるんですで、 僕は乗った途端にダーーっと発射して 駅に横付けして、じゃあまた明日つって ブわーンとか言ってっちゃうっていう。 そういう人だったですね。とても優しい人 で この映画は犯人役のオーディションを受け た人がいっぱいあの出てるんですね。だ から僕の友達も随分出てるんですね。撃と かシスピアとかねやってましたから ガリ股タの歩き方はね、ま、当時の シェクスピア劇ってのは日本ではバレーの ように、え、あの、動してたんですね。そ 、僕に対しては演技についてのアドバイス はしなかったように思いますね。多分 こいつにしてもしょうがないと思ったのか もしれませんね。若像ですからね。 だから、ま、自由にやりなさいと。でも後 で考えてみると 僕も結構わがまにやったつもりですが、後 で考えてみると 黒沢さんの手のひの上で、ええ、遊んでた ということだと思いますね。若者に対する ある種の慈しみたいなものは書き込まれて いましたけども、黒沢さんが取ってるうち にその、え、みたいなものがもっと増えた ような気がしますね。犯罪者、あの、若い 犯罪そこがすごいところだと思います。 黒沢明の ところで本藤さん私が試しになんて嬉しい でしょう。嬉しくないんですか? どうしてそんなことを言うんだ?君はなぜ君と私を憎み合う領端として考えるんだ? なぜだか分かりませんね。私には自己分析の趣味なんかありませんからね。ただ私のアパートの部屋は冬は寒くて寝られない。夏は暑くて寝られない。その参生の部屋から見上げるとあなたのうちは天国みたいに見えましたよ。 毎日毎日見上げてるうちにだんだんあなたが憎くなってきた。 難しい場面はやっぱりラストシーンですね。これはもう真っ白になりました。え、何があってんだか自分で全くわからなかった。で、あそこで立ち上がってあの目の前の金網みを握りしめる アクションがあるんですが多分場で出たリブだったと思いますねえ。 え、で、あの、金網はあのライトが強烈 だったんで、あの、焼けてました。で、僕 は火傷しました。火傷も気がつかなかった 。やってる間終わってしばらくしてから 気がつきました。そのくらい、え、夢中 だったんですね。だからうまくできたのか 、 え、責任を果たせたなっていう。 気持ちになりました。
High and Low (Japanese: 天国と地獄, Hepburn: Tengoku to Jigoku; lit. ’Heaven and Hell’) is a 1963 Japanese police procedural film directed by Akira Kurosawa. It was written by Kurosawa, Hideo Oguni, Eijirō Hisaita [ja], and Ryūzō Kikushima as a loose adaptation of the 1959 novel King’s Ransom by Evan Hunter. Starring Toshiro Mifune, Tatsuya Nakadai, Kyōko Kagawa, Tatsuya Mihashi, Yutaka Sada [ja], and Tsutomu Yamazaki, it tells the story of Japanese businessman Kingo Gondo (Mifune) struggling for control of the major shoe company at which he is a board member. He plans a leveraged buyout of the company with his life savings, when a kidnapper mistakenly abducts his chauffeur’s son to ransom him for 30 million yen.
Production began in 1962 at Toho Studios. Filming took place on location at Yokohama and on set at Toho; it lasted from 2 September to 30 January 1963. The film has been seen to represent a moral conflict within the backdrop of the post–World War II Japanese economic miracle. High and Low’s approach to issues of social class and narrative structure have been praised, with technical elements—such as the film’s blocking—receiving particular attention. Post-production took just under a month, and after test-screenings in mid-February 1963, it received a wide distribution.
High and Low was released in Japan on 1 March 1963 and received generally positive reviews both domestically and abroad. It became the highest-grossing film at the Japanese domestic box office that year. It was in the Official Selection for the Venice Film Festival and was nominated for Best Foreign Film at the Golden Globe Awards for 1964. The film has since received greater acclaim, and is often considered to be among Kurosawa’s greatest films. It is viewed as influential on police procedural cinema, and has been remade multiple times internationally.
Plot
Wealthy executive Kingo Gondo is engaged in a struggle to gain control of the company National Shoes. The board of the company is split between executives seeking to make cheap and low-quality shoes, and the ageing largest shareholder who makes sturdy but unfashionable shoes. Gondo rejects these plans, envisioning a strategy requiring high production costs for long-term profitability. He has secretly set up a leveraged buyout to gain control of the company, mortgaging all his property. Just as he is about to put the plan into action, Gondo receives a phone call from someone claiming to have kidnapped his son, Jun. Gondo is prepared to pay the ransom, but the call is dismissed as a prank when Jun returns home from playing outside. However, Jun’s playmate Shinichi, the child of Gondo’s chauffeur, is missing as the kidnappers had mistakenly abducted him instead.
In another phone call, the kidnapper reveals that he has discovered his mistake but still demands the same ransom. Gondo is forced to make a decision whether to pay the ransom to save the child or complete the buyout. After contemplating it, Gondo announces that he will not pay the ransom, fearing that doing so would jeopardise his job, his finances, and the future of his family. His plans are thwarted when his top aide lets the “cheap shoes” faction know about the kidnapping in return for a promotion should they take over. Finally, after continuous pleading from the chauffeur and under pressure from his wife, Gondo decides to pay the ransom. The evening prior to the ransom exchange, Gondo fixes two briefcases to contain pods that release a foul odour when submerged in water or pink smoke when burnt. Following the kidnapper’s instructions, the money is put into the briefcases and thrown out from a moving train. Shinichi is safely recovered at the site of the money drop.
