Our walking journey begins in the heart of Positano, the iconic vertical village that drapes itself over the face of a cliff overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea. While often pictured under a brilliant sun, Positano reveals a different, more intimate soul in the rain. The crowds thin, the sound of footsteps echoes off ancient arches, and the sea below turns a dramatic, steel-grey.

From the moment you descend into the town, you are embraced by its signature spiral streets. Our path follows the characteristic scalinata—staircases that serve as roads—leading us past ceramic shops and family-run trattorias, their windows glowing warmly against the grey. The air is filled with the scent of lemon groves and damp earth, a sensory counterpoint to the shimmering wet cobblestones.

The undisputed heart of our journey is the Chiesa di Santa Maria Assunta, with its magnificent majolica-tiled dome. Unlike any other on the coast, this dome’s yellow, green, and blue tiles glisten under the rain, standing as a beacon for fishermen and travelers alike. Inside, the Byzantine icon of the Black Madonna watches over the village, a symbol of resilience.

We’ll wander down to the Spiaggia Grande, where the famous row of beach umbrellas is folded and the fishing boats are pulled high onto the dark volcanic sand. Here, the drama of the storm is most palpable, with waves crashing against the shore and the cliffs rising impossibly steep on either side. You’ll hear the rhythmic crash of the sea, the patter of rain on awnings, and the distant laughter from a café where locals seek shelter with espresso.

Above us, the Path of the Gods (Il Sentiero degli Dei) disappears into the mist. While hiking may pause for the weather, the mythology of this legendary trail—where ancient gods were said to walk—feels more present than ever, shrouded in clouds that cling to the summit of Monte Pertuso.
