This early gem starring the great Mifune Toshiro tells the tale of Katakana Yonetaro aka “The Shark,” a rough-and-tumble horse trader in Japan’s rugged northernmost territory of Hokkaddo.
I am always amazed that there are films that never grow old and never lose their vibrant quality no matter how old they are. This is the mark of a masterpiece. This is a heartbreaking story and I could not watch certain parts of it now as I have been watching it the second time. Mifune Toshiro is a legend, because he could become a character like no one else. He literally impersonated someone, as if he really were that person and he always made the best of that character. That is why he was the greatest artist of the 20th century.
He played the crippled horse trader when he was healthy and young and strong and that must have been tough to act out. It is so unnatural. I love all the emotions he demonstrated in the character, who although a rough man had a heart of gold and loved his son so much that he made incredible sacrifices for him. What a turn around! It is as if we saw two men and not the same. When I first saw the farewell, I cried sobbing. And I bawled many times during the film. I did not cry now, because I forwarded many painful parts, I could not endure watching again.
