The leading man of his era, Toshiro Mifune cemented his superstar status in over 150 films during his lifetime in roles that reflected antihero sentiments and underdog struggles during times of misery and woe.

Mifune found movie stardom when he met fabled director Akira Kurosawa and became the face of Toho’s Kinuta studio.Their creative collaboration would span a decade and a half, resulting in 16 films including Drunken Angel, Rashomon, Yojimbo and Seven Samurai.

Drafted into the Imperial Japanese Army in 1939 at the age of 19, Mifune harbored a passion for photography and once said that he never felt the slightest inferiority complex towards foreigners.

In 2016, he received a posthumous star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, becoming the fourth ever Japanese celebrity after Godzilla to receive such an award.
